MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon wrestling team opened up their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule with a dual against the University of Mary Marauders at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse Wednesday night. The Dragons stopped a late rally by Mary and held on for a 25-16 win.
The Dragons stormed out of the gate with a quick paced attack and began the night on a 20-0 run. Sophomore Corey Ullmer began the action at 125 pounds and improved his record to 14-4 on the strength of his three takedowns in the win over Matt Garcia.
The Dragons continued with two more wrestlers off to a hot start. Junior
Evan Forde took on Tanner Beaman in the 133-pound weight class. Forde was able to counter every move Beaman made, including two reversals and an escape late in the match that sealed the win, improving Forde's overall season record to 13-4.
The Dragons success early on was amplified by junior
Brady Schneeberger who wrestled at 141 pounds taking on Cody Schmidt. After Schneeberger held a close 4-0 lead in the second period, Schmidt gained a reversal on Schneeberger but was countered in return. Schneeberger reversed Schmidt and pinned his opponent for the first fall of the evening at the 5:46 mark of the match.
Not to be out-done, sophomore
Tyler Steinwand took the mat with only three matches under his belt in the young season, wrestling at 149 pounds. Steinwand took control early on, forcing two take downs of Landon Della Silva in the first period and lead early on 6-2.
The lead would only grow for Steinwand as he scored a take down once more and also had a pair of three-point near falls, leaving him with a firm control of the match after the second period, leading 14-3. Steinwand would gain one more near fall and beat Della Silva on a technical fall, 19-3 at the 7:18 mark of the match. Steinwand's win puts him at 2-2 on the season.
The Dragons lead was tested late but the early success was the key and the Dragons won their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference debut under new head coach
Kris Nelson, improving their record to 3-4 on the season (1-0 NSIC). The loss brings the Marauders record to 0-2, (0-1 NSIC). The Dragons will head to Dickinson State University January 14 at 7 pm.
