MARSHALL, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons set out on the final road trip of the regular season. The Dragons got a huge boost from senior goalkeeper
Alison Wanner who got her first shutout of the season to lead the Dragons to a 1-0 win over the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs.
The shorthanded Dragons did not let their thin bench wear them down despite an early flurry of activity in their own end. The Mustangs rattled off five straight kicks in a span of three minutes that buzzed Wanner but the senior held her ground and turned away the attack.
The Dragons offense did not let the pressure overcome them and turned the tables half way through the first half as they forced Mustangs goalkeeper Kendra Olchefske to make three saves in a short, six minute time frame. Again, Wanner came up big for the Dragons as she stopped two more Mustangs shots as the first half drew to a close with a scoreless tie on the board.
The action in the second half started off slowly as the Dragons got the first shot of the half at the 15:25 mark of the second half that was turned away by Olchefske. After a back and forth display of offense, coupled with a pair of goalkeepers on their game, freshman
Amanda Wurdeman entered the game at the 68:26 mark.
Just over 10 minutes later, Wurdeman netted her first goal as a Dragon to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead at the 79:01 mark. The Dragons defense stifled the Mustangs offense and did not allow another shot on goal as Wanner finished off her 11 save shutout and got the Dragons their first win on the season.
The Dragons push their record to 1-10-1 on the season (1-6-1 NSIC) and will look to keep the streak alive against the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Mankato.
