MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon soccer team ended the 2010 season on a bittersweet moment as they celebrated the careers of nine upperclassmen but couldn't muster up a win, battling hard against the Upper Iowa Peacocks, losing 2-1.
The Dragons honored seniors
Alison Wanner,
Laura Kohtala,
Alison Ramaeker,
Tricia Vanyo and
Rachel Thompson, and juniors
Aimee Laurencelle,
Katelin Roos,
Katherine Adams and
Kirsten Jacobse, who each ended their careers on Sunday afternoon.
The Peacocks took a 1-0 lead before halftime on a goal scored by Liz Kaluzinski that was fed to her by Alyssa Ptersburg at the 20:38 mark.
With 13 minutes left to play in the game, the Dragons built up some offensive momentum off of a corner kick that was passed around near the goal but didn't register a shot. After clearing to mid-field, the ball was tipped into Jordan Wallenborn who shot the ball off the hands of UIU's goalkeeper. The goalkeeper managed to save the ball but deflected it out to the feet of Kathryn Adams who shot the ball in with fury and scored her first goal of the season with 12:25 remaining in the game.
The excitement did not last long as the Peacocks answered back with seven minutes remaining in the game as Kaluzinski fed the ball to Shaina Marnell for the game winner.
The Dragons finish the 2010 season with a 1-15-1 overall record and sit 1-11-1 in the league.
