MOORHEAD, Minn. - Three senior Dragon volleyball players were honored on Friday night before the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team topped the Winona State Warriors in a four-set match, on the way to the team's 15th win of the season (25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 25-17).
The Dragon volleyball program honored seniors Ashley Pyffereon,
Leigh Splittstoesser and
Laura Tvrdik for their commitment to the team and their leadership on the court during their tenure as Dragons before the game.
Tvrdik and Splittstoesser led the team on the court in the match, as Pyffereon played in her first match since mid-October when she was sidelined due to injury. Tvrdik had 16 kills, hitting .443 in the match with three block assists. Splittstoesser had 44 assists and also had 10 digs. She picked up two blocks in the match, including one solo block. Pyffereon had 13 digs in the match as she played the back row for Tvrdik.
The Dragons took the first set quickly as they spread the attacks around the court, with four hitters each tallying three kills (Tvrdik,
Meredith Egeland,
Heidi Lensing and
Ashley Feldman). MSUM out-hit WSU .294 to .053 in the first set.
In the second set the Dragons took a 4-1 lead after a kill by Tvrdik and Lensing had one of her season-match high three service aces, an never looked back as they maintained at least a three point lead the remainder of the set. Tvrdik closed out the set with two kills in the final three points.
The Warriors battled back after intermission as they were lifted by a team effort on defense as they dug up 23 Dragon attacks to hold the home team to a .116 hitting percentage in the third set. The Warriors claimed the set victory on a kill by Bekah Saugen, who had three kills in the set.
The Dragons closed out the match by having 13 kills to the Warriors eight in the fourth set, including a Tvrdik kill set up by Splittstoesser for the match-point.
MSUM is now 15-12 overall and 11-8 in the NSIC. They will host the Upper Iowa Peacocks in the final regular season match at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 4 p.m.
