FARGO, N.D. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons tennis team opened up the 2010 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season with a 6-3 win over the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Saturday at Courts Plus in Fargo.
The Dragons lost the first doubles match but took victories in both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, 8-5 and 8-1, respectively.
2009 NSIC Freshman of the Year,
Kayla Huether picked up her first victory at the NO. 1 singles slot as she topped Carrie Dahlman of UMD winning the tie breaker set three, 10-7. She had lost the first set 4-6 but came back to take the second set 7-6 winning in the tie breaker to push the match to three sets.
The Dragons also had wins at the No. 4 through No. 6 singles matches.
Alyse Grelson took a 6-2, 6-1 match at No.4, while
Ashley Taborsky took the No.5 match, 7-5, 6-2.
Susan Gilkerson picked up her second win of the season at No. 6 singles, trading the first two sets, 6-3, 3-6. She pushed Anne Bertrang to the limit in the third set as she pulled off the 10-8 win.
The Dragons will next face St. Benedict's College on Feb. 19 in St. Cloud, Minn. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
