MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead basketball teams will play their final road series this upcoming weekend as they will face tough competition in Southwest Minnesota State and MSU Mankato. The women's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 8 p.m. each day.
WOMEN
The Dragons go into the game with an 15-5 overall record and 9-4 in league play, one game out of first in the NSIC. MSUM completed an NSIC road sweep last weekend over Northern State and Mary. It was their first weekend sweep since the first weekend of conference play in early December.
Senior
Alison Nash-Gerlach tallied her 1,000th career point on Friday as she led the Dragons with 22 points over the University of Mary. She is the 17th Dragons women's basketball player that has eclipsed the 1,000 point mark, with eight regular season games left this year. She also had 4 rebounds.
On Friday, the team was led by Nash-Gerlach who was one of three Dragons who scored in double figures. Senior
Meghan Rettke had 16 points and 8 rebounds, while sophomore
Brittany Mayclin had 13 points, going 4-for-5 from behind the three-point arc, three of which came in the first half.
In Saturday's win over the Marauders,
Angie Jetvig led the Dragons with 15 points, coming off the bench. She also had seven boards. Rettke was one rebound away from her 13th double-double of the season, as she marked 14 points and and nine rebounds. Mayclin also tallied double-digits for the second night in a row with 11 points.
Krista Opheim had seven assists, six points and four rebounds in the game.
NUMBERS
Nash-Gerlach was the first of three seniors that are flirting with milestones as Dragons women's basketball players as she became the 17th player in history of the program to eclipse 1,000 points in a career. She ended the weekend with 1,016 points.
Krista Opheim is just five (431) assists shy of tying the school record for assists in a career. The standing record is held by Lisa Clark (1983-87) with 436 assists.
Meghan Rettke has a career total of 763 rebounds and 926 points. She is currently ranked eighth all-time at MSUM in rebounds in a career but is just 13 shy of the No. 7 slot held by current Assistant Coach
Allison Swenson.
OPPONENTS
The SMSU Mustangs are 13-7 overall this season with a 7-6 league mark. Most recently, the Mustangs took two games at home against Minnesota-Duluth and Bemidji State. In the first meeting of these team's, the Mustangs escaped the Dragons 66-64 in Moorhead.
The reigning National Champions, the MSU Mankato Mavericks, are currently on the bubble to make the NSIC tournament as they are tied for eighth with two other teams. Last weekend, they suffered a tough two-point loss to Bemidji State on Friday and came up with a win over UMD the following evening. In the first match-up between MSU and MSUM this season, the Dragons were victorious with a 82-74 win.
MEN
The Dragons men's basketball team split their most recent conference weekend as they upset Northern State in an overtime game on Friday, 78-75 , and suffered a loss to Mary on Saturday, 74-58.
On Friday,
Chad Thompson came up with a huge rebound in the final seconds of overtime and put the Dragons up by two as he connected on both free-throws with four seconds left to play, giving the team their seventh win of the year.
Jake Driscoll led the team with 19 points, hitting all six attempts from the charity stripe.
Dennis Williamson ended the night with 15 points, six boards and knocked down five of six from the line. Novak had 13 points going 6-for-10 from the field.
Brent Egan had 10 points.
The Marauders redeemed the season opening loss to the Dragons on Saturday as they continued to succeed in the NSIC. Driscoll led the Dragons with 16 points. Williamson and
Xavier Reed each had eight points.
OPPONENTS
The Mustangs are currently in a three-way tie for seventh place in the conference with a 6-7 league tally and a 11-8 overall record. Most recently, the Mustangs swept UMD and BSU in conference action. The Dragons won the first contest this season between the two teams, 68-55.
The Mavericks have suffered only one loss this season, coming two weekends ago to Augustana. They are currently at the top of the conference with a 12-1 NSIC tally and an 18-1 overall record. They have surpassed the 100 point mark in three games this season, including the first meeting of the two team's at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse, 105-68.
