MARSHALL, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons won a close match, 5-4, over the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs on Sunday as the victory was decided in a hard fought No.1 singles match.
The Mustangs took two of the doubles matches to go up 2-1 before the singles matches started. Both the No. 1 and No.2 doubles matches went to the Mustangs by scores of 8-6. The Dragons took the No.3 match by a score of 8-5.
MSUM's
Brenna Johnson took the No. 6 match 6-0 and 6-3 for the biggest win margin on the day.
Four of the singles matches went into an extra set as the Dragons took three of them to secure the win. SMSU's Angie Weigmann took the No.5 match over
Ashley Taborsky, 6-3, 2-6 and 11-9 to regain the lead for the Mustangs, 3-2.
The Dragons took the next two matches at No.4 and No.3 as Elyse Grelson and
Emily Delaney took the overtime set to win, respectively. Grelson topped Trisha Baldwin in the extra set 10-3 after each taking a set, 6-3 and 5-7. Delaney topped Cailey Groupe 15-13 in the overtime set, after taking the second set to tie the match (5-7, 6-2).
After Danielle Hildebrant from SMSU took the No.2 singles match the score was tied at 4-4.
Kayla Huether won the deciding match for MSUM as she pulled out the final extra set match for the Dragons as she topped SMSU's Lissa Murakami 10-6 in extra play. Huether had taken the first set 6-2 but had lost the second 3-6.
The Dragons move to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the NSIC. The Dragons went 1-2 on the week as they suffered losses to Montana State-Billings and Gustavus Aldophus (Minn.).
