MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball squad met up with Minnesota-Crookston in an NSIC matchup Wednesday. The Dragons busted out the bats and coupled that with two great pitching performances to sweep the Golden Eagles, 7-1 and 7-2.
The Dragons got started early in the first game as
Amanda Moore drew a leadoff walk to put pressure on the Golden Eagles pitching staff. Moore would score a few plays later on a
Jessica Hollis triple to center. Hollis used great awareness to score the second run on a throw to first that retired
Simone Parcells.
Desi Demarco made her presence known in the third as she led off with a homerun to centerfield.
Jessica Mroz did not let up as she folloed DeMarco's hit with a double, later scoring on a wild pitch that pushed the Dragon lead up to 4-0.
Mara Litzer was dominant as the Dragon's starting pitcher, allowing only one run and three hits over seven innings while striking out eight batters. The Dragons were solid defensively, not giving up an error in the first contest.
Along with nine hits, the Dragons were able to put away the win comfortably, defeating the Golden Eagles 7-1.
The second game of the doubleheader brought more good news for the Dragons.
Katie Howland was hit by a pitch to lead off the Dragons first inning and stealing a base and capitalizing on a Golden Eagle error to move up to third.
DeMarco would come through again, getting the ball deep enough to get the run home.
Jessica Mroz would walk two batters later and be driven home on a Moore single to center.
The Dragons broke open the game in the fourth inning. The Dragons took advantage of two Golden Eagle miscues that would set up
Betsy Dickson with a chance to put the game away.
Dickson answered with a base hit, utilizing her above-average speed to leg out a
triple. Dickson would be brought home on a Howland double that pushed the Dragon lead to 5-2. A wild pitch would bring home Howland as the Dragons pulled away, winning the second game by a final of 7-2.
