DULUTH, Minn. – The series with the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs continued for the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons Wednesday afternoon as the two teams met in conference action after competing in nonconference play Tuesday. The Dragons tried to slug with the Bulldogs but couldn't prevent a sweep as the Bulldogs took the first game 14-5 and won the second game by a 16-8 final.
The Dragons jumped ahead of the Bulldogs early on in the first game as the team worked a bases loaded jam with one out when
Casey Preston singled in the first run of the game. The Dragons continued to nickel and dime their way around the bases and came away with a 3-0 lead.
After the Dragons added a run in the second following a two-run inning for Minnesota-Duluth, the Bulldogs responded with an eight-run bottom of the third that gave them a 10-4 lead. The Bulldogs would pull away late for good, winning by a final of 14-6.
In the second game the Dragons got on the board first when
Molly Keeler grounded out to the shortstop with the bases loaded and one out to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs bats came to life in the bottom of the second as the team hit for their second eight-run inning of the day. The Dragons chipped back at the lead as
Betsy Dickson hit her first homerun of the season, scoring
Katie Howland who led off with a single.
Two batters later, after A.J. Hoefer reached first getting hit by a pitch,
Casey Preston also hit a two-run homerun and the Dragons were back to with in three. But the Bulldogs would add on eight more runs and took the second game by a 16-8 final in six innings.
The Dragons fall to 5-31 on the season (3-15 NSIC) and remain on the road as they travel to Minnesota State Mankato to play the Mavericks in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
