MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Dragons closed out the season with a doubleheader against NSIC foe Northern State. The Wolves got rallies late in both games and took two from the Dragons in Moorhead.
The Dragons got out to an early 4-2 lead on Northern State with a two-out rally started by
Desi DeMarco who earned a walk and was followed by
Betsy Dickson who was hit by a pitch to put a runner in scoring position. DeMarco later scored on a Wolves error.
DeMarco would again factor into a Dragon rally when she scored on a sacrifice fly by
Sam Adolph, which tied the game at 7-7 heading into the seventh inning. The Wolves caught fire and scored three runs in their half of the inning to seal a 10-7 win.
The Dragons erased an early 1-0 deficit when
Katie Howland stole third with two outs and was brought home on a Dickson single to right. Dickson broke the tie when senior
Casey Preston brought her home on a base hit.
Head Coach Kristin Boyes took a chance in the fifth inning with the speedy Dickson on third and Adolph at the plate. What was intended to be a squeeze play turned into a bunt single that scored Dickson to again break the tie and give the Dragons a 3-2 lead.
With the lead up to 4-2, the Dragons headed to the seventh looking to close out the Wolves. The Wolves took advantage of a couple of Dragon miscues along with a pair of hits to rally with four runs in the inning. The Dragons comeback fell short in their final at bats and the Wolves held on for a 6-4 win.
The Dragons finish at 7-39 on the season and a conference record of 5-23. The Dragons part ways with their lone senior
Casey Preston who hit 13 career homeruns and a .265 career average.
