MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Dragons returned to Minnesota State University Moorhead to halt an early season skid against the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. A couple of lucky bounces went the Golden Bears' way and the Dragons fell by a final of 2-0.
The Dragons and Golden Bears exchanged back and forth drives, usually resulting in deflected or poorly timed kicks wide of both goals. Senior
Alison Wanner secured the first shot on goal a few minutes in and neither goalkeeper saw much action until the 28:52 mark when the Golden Bears got there second shot on goal. Prior to that the Dragons had a flurry of five shots either blocked or deflected near their opponents goal.
With time winding down the game appeared to be heading for a 0-0 tie until an errant kick, deflected off Wanner was put in by the Golden Bears' leading scorer Arielle Stimson for her seventh goal of the season at the 44:20 mark of the first half.
The second half featured many substitutions but little results. Both teams mixed and matched lineups, looking for a decisive edge. After two missed shots by the Dragons, Stimson once again found herself on the scoreboard, assisting the Golden Bears' second goal of the game on a shot by Brittany Kapala. The Dragons flurried near the end but couldn't make it back as they fell by a final of 2-0.
The Golden Bears improve to 3-3-1 on the season (2-1 NSIC). The Dragons fall to 0-7 on the season (0-3 NSIC) and will face off against reigning NSIC Coach of the Year Becky Heiberger and the St. Cloud State Huskies Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
