Dragon Basketball Hosts Golden Bears and Huskies on Alumni Weekend

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Two identical records will host the Concordia, St. Paul Golden Bears and St. Cloud State Huskies this coming weekend as the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon basketball teams return home after a road trip that brought excitement on the court and turmoil in the league.

The Dragons will host the Golden Bears on Friday, Jan. 21, and go head-to-head with the Huskies on Saturday, Jan. 22, with the women's games tipping-off at 6 p.m. The men's contests are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Both team's will go into the weekend with 6-5 league tallies while they both have 9-6 overall marks. The men's team sits seventh in the league, right behind the Golden Bears and St. Cloud State, who both enter the weekend tied for fourth with Augustana (S.D.) as they have 7-4 records in the NSIC. The women's team is fifth in the conference, tied with Augustana and Concordia, St. Paul. St. Cloud sits at ninth in the league with a 5-6 tally.

ALUMNI NIGHT
The MSUM Foundation will host the annual Alumni Night this Friday, Jan. 21, during the basketball games. They will begin checking in alumni at 5:30 p.m. and will offer $1 admission to all alumni wearing the color red.

DRAGON WOMEN
The Dragons are still receiving votes in the latest USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll released Tuesday. This past weekend the team split action on the road against Upper Iowa and Winona State (Minn.) as they topped the Peacock's on Friday, 69-63 and suffered a hard loss to the Warriors on Saturday, 86-73.

Junior Angie Jetvig continues to lead the team and the league in scoring as she increased her points per game to 18.2 after posting 41 points over the weekend, leading the field in Iowa scoring 21.

The team is still leading the league in rebounding as they are averaging 11.1 more rebounds per game than their opponents. Both Concordia and St. Cloud State trail their opponents in rebounding this season.

DRAGON MEN

The Dragons continued their streak of splitting games in conference series as they suffered a loss to Upper Iowa last weekend and also upset the No. 21 ranked Winona State Warriors on the road.

Sophomore Alex Novak had 18 points and a career-high 21 rebounds against WSU to aid the Dragons to the win. It was the first win the Dragons have had under first year Head Coach Chad Walthall over a top-25 ranked team. Novak is leading the league in rebounding, as he averages 10.6 per game.

The Dragons sit in the middle of the pack as they enter the second half of the conference season at seventh in the league with a 6-5 record.

CONCORDIA, ST. PAUL GOLDEN BEARS

After losing three straight, the Golden Bears are on a four game winning streak to aid them to be tied with the Dragons for fifth place in the league. They topped both Bemidji State and Minnesota Duluth this past weekend at home.

Maurika Hickman leads the Golden Bears this season as she is averaging 15.7 points per game. Teammate Jineen Williams, the current NSIC Player of the Week, is right on Hickman's heels as she averages 14.9 points per game.

The Golden Bear men swept the conference series at home last weekend over UMD and BSU as they improved their record to 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the league.

Peter Olafeso leads the team in points this season, averaging 14.6 points per game. Three others average over 12 points per game, including: Brent Barz (12.7), Courtney Tyler (12.5) and Kenny Olafeso (12.4).

ST. CLOUD STATE HUSKIES
Last weekend, SCSU's women's team finished a four-game homestand with a split, winning over BSU on Friday and took a hard loss to UMD on Saturday.

Over the weekend, sophomore guard Nicole Anderson had 10 steals in the game and also had 12 points for a double-double. Anderson averages over 10 points per game this season but trails teammate Sam Price and Talisha Barlow average 11.5 and 11.3, respectively.

The Huskies men are led this season by Taylor Witt, the current NSIC Player of the Week, is averging 19.3 points per game.

Two of their past three wins have been won in overtime, with a sweep of NSIC competition last season. The Huskies topped BSU in overtime last Friday while they handily took a win over Duluth on Saturday.

THE SERIES
The Dragon women trail both of hteir opponents in the all-time series as the Golden Bears lead the history 19-12, while the Huskies have a 27-17 edge. THe Dragons topped hte Huskies in their last meeting but fell to the Golden Bears by five at home last April.

The Dragon men hold a 13-9 lead in the all-time series against the Golden Bbears, and won their last contest 88-82 on Feb. 20, 2010. The Huskies hold a large lead in the all-time series, 80-38, as the storied history of these teams began in the first season of Dragon basketball in 1924-25.
