Erin Nyberg's two first half goals weren't enough for Minnesota State University Moorhead to defeat Upper Iowa Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.
The Dragons took the field facing their second to last opponent for the 2011 season. MSU Moorhead couldn't muster up a victory as they lost at Upper Iowa 5-3. The loss put the series record at 2-4 favoring the Peacocks.
Erin Nyberg wasted no time putting the Dragons on top. The first shot of the day came via Nyberg's fourth goal of the season. The netted ball went past the Peacocks' goalkeeper Kaitlyn Emanuel off a rebound three minutes into the game.
MSU Moorhead controlled the ball for the next 25 minutes as they got off eight shots compared to Upper Iowa's two. The fifth of those shots resulted in Nyberg's second goal of the day and fifth on the season.
Abby Kettler earned her third assist of the season as she passed the ball from left to right to aid in Nyberg's goal.
Upper Iowa had an answer to the pair of goals in the 12th minute. Alyssa Petersburg took a pass from Jess Dickhaus and shot the ball, netting it from the right side of the field. This score ignited a 5-0 run for Upper Iowa following halftime. The five goals resulted from 13 shots in that span for the Peacocks.
In the sixth minute,
Ashley Gallegos shot the ball across the field putting it in the back left of the net for her first goal of the season. The comeback was too late though as the game finished 5-3 in favor of the Peacocks.
The Dragons totaled 16 shots on the day and gave up a season high 20 shots to the Peacocks. Kettler and
Katherine Adams led the Dragons in attacking the net as they both totaled four shots. Nyberg's two goals came off three shots and
Ashley Swanson pitched in two shots.
Victoria Hoffman started in the net for the Dragons with a record of 5-4 following the match. In her ninth start of the season she saved nine shots including a penalty kick in the first half. The Dragons totaled 10 fouls on the day and one yellow card. The Peacocks collected five fouls and three yellow cards of their own.
The Dragons look to bounce back tomorrow in the last regular season game against NSIC opponnent Winona State. The match-up will take place in Winona, Minn. with kick-off at 1 p.m.
