Dragons Come Alive in Double Overtime Against Bison, Winning 90-84

| By:
MOORHEAD, Minn. -  The Minnesota State Unviersity Moorhead men's basketball team came alive in double overtime at the Bison Sports Arena as they defeated North Dakota State University 90-84 Tuesday night.

The Dragons opened exhibition play Tuesday night as the team went into the Bison Sports Arena set on a mission.  DJ Hamilton started the scoring for both teams hitting a three-pointer 52 seconds in.  The three was the beginning of a 20-6 run which was capped off by another Hamilton three with 11:53 remaining in the first half.  A couple turnovers allowed the Bison to cut the score to within eight with 9:28 left.

Two minutes later, the Dragons built the lead again thanks to a Bison turnover and a few missed shots.  Hamilton converted yet another three to set the highest lead of the night at 16 for the Red and White.  Over the next four minutes, four turnovers from MSUM allowed NDSU to go on a 9-0 run.  Turnovers again plagued the Dragons going into halftime allowing the lead to hit it's lowest point since 17:39 in the first.  A jumper at the buzzer from the Bison set the halftime score at 37-34 in favor of the Dragons.

The second half was started in the same fashion as the first for the Dragons as the lead was built to 11 thanks to a three-pointer from Jordan Riewer.  After another three from Riewer at the 16:26 mark, missed shots and a turnover allowed the Bison to hold the Dragons scoreless for another four minutes.  A three-pointer from Mike Felt gave NDSU their first lead of the night.  Hamilton answered with his fifth three pointer of the night to spur another Dragons lead with 12:14 remaining in the half.  Seven turnovers over the next 11 minutes let the Bison take the lead, 67-65, with 45 seconds left in regulation.  Clutch free throws from Jake Lindfors tied the game at 67 a piece and sent the game into overtime following a missed jumper from NDSU.

The home team would start the overtime period by scoring two baskets to take a 71-67 lead.  Lindfors was sent to the free throw line making the first shot but missing the second.  Off a rebound from a Bison missed layup, Lindfors would make up for the missed free throw attempt by making a game-tying three pointer.  The Bison answered back with a three of their own.  Lindfors hit a jumper to cut the deficit to one as he was the only Dragon scorer in the first overtime, until 16 seconds left in the period.  At that point, Scott Kenny took over the game by hitting a big three to send the game into double overtime.

Again the Bison took the first lead of the second overtime, 78-76.  Kenny made his second consecutive three to put the Dragons up one with three minutes to go.  The final turnover of the night from MSUM set up a basket for NDSU.  Kenny sank his final three of the night, totaling three jumpers from behind the arc in the overtime periods, to put the Dragons up by two.  The Bison tied it up at 82 with 1:41 remaining in the game.

Hamilton would hit his ninth shot of the night to put the Dragons up for good.  The Bison looked to inbound the ball quickly with Taylor Braun driving into the lane, but Lindfors was there for the big block.  Hamilton capped off his 32-point night with a jumper to set the score at 86-82 with 18 seconds left.  Following fouls from the Bison, Jake Driscoll and Charlie Chapman hit clutch free throws to seal the game for the Dragons at 90-84.

Hamilton was the game's high scorer with 32 points as he hit six of nine shots from behind the arc and 10 of 17 from the field.  Seven assists also put him as the game's leading assist man.  Lindfors did his work on the defensive boards as he totaled 11 and one on the offensive side.  He also added 21 points which was tied for the second highest total of the game.  Kenny's late three-point heroics sent him on his way to 16 total points.

MSU Moorhead looks to win again Thursday as they travel to Brookings, S.D., to take on South Dakota State Unviersity in the Frost Arena at 8:30 p.m.
