Box Score WAYNE, Neb. - The Dragon men's basketball team (8-0, 4-0 NSIC) remain perfect in their 55-51 win over the Wayne State College Wildcats (2-7, 1-4 NSIC) at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Nebraska.
MSUM started strong, opening up an 11-2 lead off of strong defense and excellent ball movement. The Dragons hit back-to-back three pointers, with
Charlie Chapman sinking an off-balance shot from the left corner, and
Jordan Riewer finding success from the same spot on the next possession. The Wildcats followed with a 10-2 run of their own, capped by Amry Shelby's long jump shot that cut the score 13-12.
Jake Lindfors, who led all scorers in the first half with eight, was in control of all aspects of his game. He checked a three-pointer and drove hard through the lane for a layup, then followed on the next possession with a whipping spin move under the basket for a scoop-shot layup on the left baseline. Lindfors' no-look pass found
Alex Novak alone under the basket for a two-handed dunk and a 26-21 lead.
Wayne State began the second half with a 4-0 run that cut the Dragon lead 28-27. MSUM only trailed once during the competition, when the Wildcats went on an eight-point run pulling ahead 39-38. But out of a time-out,
Jake Driscoll took a
DJ Hamilton pass and hit an open three pointer from the right corner, retaking the lead that the Dragons would not give back.
The aggressive play on the court led to a costly aggressive slip of the tongue, as Wildcat player Ayron Worthington earned a technical foul after taunting Lindfors. Riewer hit both free throws, moving the Dragons up 54-48.
The Dragons, however, could not pull away from the Wildcats, who continued to keep the game close. Derrell Williams completed a three-point play, as he was fouled on a layup with only 33 seconds remaining. His made free throw brought the Wildcats within three at 54-51. Williams could not convert a layup off a Wildcat steal on the subsequent possession. Lindfors was fouled on the final play, sinking one of his two free throws with ten seconds remaining, and the 55-51 win.
