MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon basketball teams will host a non-conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 7 against Minot State University at 6 and 8 p.m.
DRAGON WOMEN
The Dragon women's basketball team (3-2, 1-1 NSIC) comes into this game after going 1-1 in their first weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. On Friday, Dec. 2 the Beavers of Bemidji State University took a 75-68 victory over the Dragons.
The game was a tough fought battle, both teams were neck and neck until the last couple of minutes of play. With only 30 seconds left, the Beavers hit a short jumper to give them a six-point lead.
The Dragons, who were forced to foul, sent two players to the free-throw line. Both players hit their shots, securing the 75-68 victory for the Beavers. Sophomore forward
Megan Strese lead the Dragons with 14 points and eight rebounds, forwards
Angie Jetvig and
Morgan Zabel followed behind Strese with 12 points apiece.
On Saturday, Dec. 3, MSUM and the University of Minnesota Duluth played a back and forth game that came down to a two-point victory for the Dragons. After the go ahead jumper from senior guard
Brittany Mayclin, she made the score 63-61 with only 18 seconds left to play. The Bulldogs were unable to answer Mayclin's field goal.
Many players contributed in the win.
Angie Jetvig led the Dragon scorers with 11 points and added seven rebounds.
Megan Strese and
Haley Thomforde both added 10 points,
Morgan Zabel had nine points and six rebounds, while junior guard
Marisa Yernatich chipped in eight total points.
MINOT WOMEN
The Beavers (5-4) are currently on a three game win streak. Their most recent win came on Nov. 28 against Montana Tech. Minot defeated Montana Tech 67-50. The Boag sisters lead the way for the Beavers.
Carly and Christina, 6'2” sophomores from Tamworth, Australia, led the team with 29 and 11 points, respectively. Both added five rebounds and Carly had six steals.
Carly Boag leads the team in points per game with 14, rebounds per game with 9.1 and steals per game with 2. Senior guard April Nakatani leads the team in assists with 2.4 per game.
Carly Boag and Christina Boag will be tough but will match up nicely with 6'2”

This the first time these teams are facing off since the 2009-2010 season. On Nov. 16, 2009 the Dragons defeated the Beavers 77-55 in Moorhead. Minot State is an independent this season after leaving the Dakota Athletic Conference. In the fall of 2012 they will be joining the NSIC.
DRAGON MEN
The MSU Moorhead men's basketball team extended their win streak to five after sweeping their NSIC opening weekend against Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Duluth.
On Friday, Dec. 2 the Dragons had a 20-point win over BSU with a final score of 77-57. The first half of the game was pretty steady, with a score of 31-26 at the half.
In the second half, the Dragons started to build their lead. Capitalizing on missed shots and turnovers, they had built a 14-point lead after only nine minutes of play.
DJ Hamilton led the Dragons and all scorers with a career high 27-point performance along with five assists and three assists. Forwards
Alex Novak and
Jake Lindfors had 14 and 12 points, respectively and senior guard
Charlie Chapman added 11.
On Saturday, Dec. 3 the Dragons commanded all 40 minutes of play against the Bulldogs and grabbed the win, 85-67. After only three minutes of play the score was tied 6-6. But
Jake Lindfors got the team going after draining a three-pointer and kicked off the 41-22 show the Dragons put on to end the first half, 47-28.
In the second half the Bulldogs stuck with the Dragons, outscoring them 39-38. But the Dragons 19-point lead upheld Duluth's run and they grabbed the victory, 85-67.
The Dragons first half success was sparked once again by
DJ Hamilton. He had 22 points, going 7-of-8 from the field, 5-of-6 of those from three-point land, and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. Hamilton finished the game with a new career high, 28 points.
Jake Lindfors was next in scoring for the Dragons with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Forward
Alex Novak was also a large contributor as he went 7-of-8 from the field for 14 total points and pulled down 9 rebounds.
Coming into this game against Minot, senior guard
Jake Driscoll is only 17 points away from joining the MSUM 1,000 point club.
MINOT MEN
The Minot State University men are 1-9 overall on the season. This last weekend they played in the AT&T Jamboree. They faced off with the University of Alaska, Fairbanks on Friday, Dec. 2 and the University of Alaska, Anchorage on Saturday, Dec. 3.
The Beavers dropped both games of the weekend. Alaska Fairbanks took the close game, 83-77, and Alaska Anchorage defeated the Beavers big, 82-40.
Junior guard Yonas Behre lead the team on Friday night with 23 points and 4 rebounds while totaling 31 points on the weekend. Junior forward Josh Johnson led the team on Saturday night with nine total points.
Behre leads the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game and is followed closely by Johnson with an average of 14.1 points per game and leads the team in rebounds with 7.9 per game.
