Huskies Top Dragons in Season Opener

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The St. Cloud State Huskies topped the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball team on Saturday in the visitors season openner, 6-4.

The Dragons started off with the lead, going up 2-0 after the top of the first inning. Katie Howland led the season off witha single to center field and after advancing to second, she was knocked in on a Molly Keeler single into right field.

Keeler advanced on an error and was driven in by AJ Hoefer, who hit a double up the middle. She would advance to third but did not go home as the Huskies were able to regroup and stop the Dragons drive.

The Huskies would answer with a run of their own in the second inning, but would go down by two again as the Dragons put up another run in the top of the third. The run was the first home run of the 2011 season for the Dragons, hit by Keeler over the centerfield fence.

SCSU tied the game in the bottom half of the same inning on a two-run home run of their own.

MSUM would take one more lead in the game, going up 4-3, as Howland would pick up her second single and second run of the game. She moved to second on a error adn scored on a Keeler single into left field.

The Huskies tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as they put together three singles and a double to take the lead for good. They put on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to win 6-4.

Keeler ended the game with three hits, two runs and two RBI. Howland had two hits an two runs, while Steeli Norton had two hits. Norton started the game and pitched four innings for the Dragons. Alexa D'Onofrio suffered the loss.

The Dragons will continue play on Saturday at 5 p.m. against Northern State. A complete game report will be available on Sunday, Feb. 27.
