CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball team split Monday's doubleheader against the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles took game one, 7-6, while the Dragons won the second, 5-2.
GAME ONE BOX SCORE
The Golden Eagles struck first as they led the bottom of the first inning off with a home run by Kaytlin Bowar. UMC would tack on two more runs in the second and four runs in the third to go up 7-0 before the Dragons would answer.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Dragons were able to produce four runs on two outs.
Mara Litzer led the attack with a single and was followed by
Steeli Norton's fourth home run of the season.
Amanda Moore and
Jessica Hollis followed with consecutive singles. With both runners advancing a base on a wild pitch, they would both score on a ball hit to the outfield by
Coley Thompson.
The Dragons would put up two more runs in the fifth, both on two outs as the team took advantage of four consecutive errors by the Golden Eagles.
Steph Thomas came into the game in the top of the sixth inning, in relief for UMC, and struck out four of the final seven batters taking the win. It was the first time the Golden Eagles had beat the Dragons in four games played this season, thus far.
Litzer suffered the loss as she gave up six runs on seven hits, while striking out two. Norton came in relief, throwing three and two-thirds innings, giving up six hits and one run, while fanning four.
GAME TWO BOX SCORE
In the second game, The Dragons put the first runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning as
Jessica Mroz tallied the first run after reaching base on a one-out double. She was scored on a single by
AJ Hoefer after
Molly Keeler was walked.
Miranda Bronson knocked in Keeler in the next at-bat.
In the fifth inning, the Dragons tacked on two more runs as Keeler hit her second double of the year, scoring both
Alexa D'Onofrio and Litzer. D'Onofrio reached on a singe and Litzer had hit a double.
The Golden Eagles matched two runs in their half of the fifth inning as K Burns hit a two-run home run.
MSUM tallied another run int he sixth as they moved Bronson around the bases on UMC errors.
D'Onofrio earned the win over UMC, throwing five complete innings, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out six. Norton threw two innings in relief giving up one hit and striking out three.
It was the Dragon's 12th win of the season, moving their overall record to 12-20 and 4-15 tally in the league. The Golden Eagles are now 8-22 overall and 2-14 in the NSIC.
MSU Moorhead will return to the diamond on Thursday in their first home game of the season. The team will host Valley City (N.D.) at 3 and 5 p.m. at Nemzek Field.
