Aberdeen, S.D. – Three Dragons scoring in double digits helped the 19th-ranked Dragons secure a 81-74 win over the Northern State University Wolves at Wachs Arena on Sunday night. The Dragons' win moves them to 12-1 overall, 8-1 in the NSIC, while the Wolves fall to 9-5 overall, 5-5 in the NSIC.
Dragon guard Charlie Chapman scored seven points off two possessions, converting a 4-point play and hitting a long-range three to move the Dragons ahead 7-4. Chapman led all Dragons at the half with 11 points, and 4 assists, shooting 3-for-4 from the field, 2-for-3 from three, and 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
At two different points during the half, NSU went on 6-0 runs. The first run was stopped by a 6-0 run by Jordan Riewer. Riewer was fouled on a lay up attempt and converted the three-point play. Off a Chapman steal on the ensuing possession, Riewer spotted up for a three and a 25-18 Dragon lead. Riewer scored a career-high 13 points.
The Dragons had 14 three point attempts in first half, converting 7 for 43.8%, while the Dragons had 13 bench points compared to 4 for the Wolves.
Defensive breakdowns at the start of the second half allowed NSU to go on a 6-0 run and tie the game at 39. The Wolves tied the score 54-54 when Trent Zomer made a three-point shot. Chapman came off the bench and drained a three pointer, getting fouled in the process, but was unable to convert his second 4-point play of the night.
As NSU cut the Dragon lead 59-58, MSUM took only 30 seconds to go on an 8-0 run. Jake Lindfors hit his first basket of the night, sinking a three-pointer. Lindfors stole the ball on the next possession, and found Chapman for an open three. D. J. Hamilton stole the ball on the ensuing possession, and was fouled as he made his layup. Hamilton converted his free-throw for a three-point play, and a 67-58 Dragon lead.
MSUM found themselves in foul trouble, allowing NSU to keep the game close. Jimmy Johnson fouled out with just over 8 minutes remaining in the game, Riewer fouled out with just under 3 minutes remaining, and Novak picked up 4 fouls early in the second half. The Wolves were able to convert 16-of-20 free-throw attempts, but this was not enough as the Dragons hit 6-for-8 free throws in the last minute to hold on for the win.
MSUM finished the game 24-for-53, 45.3%, from the field, 11-for-25, 44%, from three, and 22-for-29, 75.9%, from the free throw line. The Dragons were led in scoring by Hamilton (24), Chapman (18), and Riewer (13).
NSU shot 28-for-59, 47.5%, from the field, 2-for-11, 18.2%, from three, and 16-for-20, 80%, from the free throw line. The Wolves were led in scoring by Dustin Tetzlaff (26), Collin Pryor (11), and Alex Thomas (10).
The Dragons will be back home at Alex Nemzek fieldhouse this upcoming weekend, playing the Upper Iowa Peacocks on Friday night at 8:00 pm, and #10-ranked Winona State Warriors on Saturday night at 6:00 pm.
