Dragon Football Hits the Road to Face Nationally-Ranked Minnesota-Duluth

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead football team faces a big test on the road this week when it plays at No. 10-ranked Minnesota Duluth for a 6 p.m. game Saturday at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.

Saturday's game will mark the 54th meeting between the two schools, with UMD holding a 32-17-4 advantage. The Bulldogs have won 10 straight in the series, dating back to 2000. MSUM's last win was a 20-14 victory in 1999.

MSUM (0-5, 0-5 NSIC) is coming off of a 45-7 home loss to Northern State, while Minnesota-Duluth suffered a last-second 51-49 loss to St. Cloud State on Sept. 29.

About MSUM
A promising first half turned sour in the second half for the Dragons in a 45-7 loss to Northern State. The Dragons trailed 17-0 at halftime, but a 21-point third quarter helped the Wolves pull away. Three turnovers and nine penalties hindered the Dragons' attack.

For the offense, senior tight end Shawn Marlowe had a solid game, catching five passes for 104 yards and a score. He had four catches for 79 yards in the first half alone. Freshman quarterback Jake Hodge was 12-of-29 passing for 152 yards, while freshman Ryan Toelle was 5-of-8 passing for 79 yards and a score. Freshman Adam Jiskra had four catches for 40 yards as he continued his solid debut season.

On defense, freshman safety Shea DeJong had a game-high 14 tackles, including one for loss, while sophomore Nick Seedorff had nine tackles while Cory Capra had a sack.

Northern State outgained MSUM, 408-193 in the game.

Sophomore Brandon Schell leads the MSUM ground attack with 166 yards, while Hodge has 596 yards passing and three scores. Jiskra leads the receiving corps with 21 catches for 332 yards and two scores.

On defense, DeJong has a team-best 62 tackles (second in the NSIC), followed by sophomore Nick Seedorff with 39 and senior Tyler Brody with 33. Junior Brad Hauer leads with 1.5 sacks.

MSUM is averaging 49.2 yards per game on the ground and 167.8 through the air. The Dragons average 11.2 points per game.

Steve Laqua is in his second season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 2-14 at the school.

About Minnesota-Duluth
Minnesota-Duluth is 4-1 on the year, both overall and in the conference.  The Bulldogs were ranked No. 2 last week but suffered a stunning last-second 51-49 loss to St. Cloud State. In the game, UMD surrendered 637 yards of offense to the Huskies, including 461 through the air.

For the season, UMD scores 48.8 points per game and allows 29; the Bulldogs are rushing for 254.0 yards per game on the ground and throwing for 210.4.  Senior quarterback Chase Vogler has had an outstanding start to the season, throwing for 1,038 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 63.2 percent of his passes. He also has 313 rushing yards and six scores. Austin Sikorski leads the UMD ground game with 375 yards and eight touchdowns, while Zach Zweifel has 20 catches for 298 yards and two scores to lead the receiving corps.

Colby Ring and Cameron Harper each have 36 tackles to lead the UMD defense.

Bob Nielson is in his 10th season as UMD's head coach with a record of 94-25 at the school.

True freshmen, True Impact
Six true freshmen start for the MSUM offense, including Hodge,  offensive linemen Bennen Bierman, Troy Peterson and Jake Antolak and receivers Tyler Rivard and Jiskra. Bierman and Peterson anchor the left side of the line, while Antolak has assumed the center duties.

Jiskra and Rivard each have 21 and 12 catches, respectively, to lead the offense. Hodge has thrown for 596 yards in four games.

On defense, three true freshmen start, including safety Shea DeJong, who leads the team with 62 tackles, and safety Nico Caramella. Sheldon Jones, also a true freshman, starts at cornerback and is fourth on the team with tackles and leads the team with two forced fumbles. He also has moved to the top of the depth chart as a kick returner.

Seedorff Making Presence Felt
Seedorff has been a solid defensive player thus far for the Dragons. He is second on the team with 39 tackles and leads the team with 24 assists.

Happy Returns
The Dragon special teams and defense got into the touchdown act during the Upper Iowa game. Sophomore Lomumba Ismail blocked a punt that was returned for a touchdown by Barik Williams, while Lee picked off a deflected pass and ran it back 92 yards for a score.

Block Party
Ismail recorded blocked punts in back-to-back games, including the one that led to the touchdown against Upper Iowa. Ismail also blocked a punt against Sioux Falls in Week 2.
