MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team finished off the 2012 campaign on a winning note wih a 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 sweep of Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday at Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM (17-12, 9-11 NSIC) ended the season on a five-match winning streak. Bemidji State ended the year at 4-23 overall and 2-18 in the league.
Senior
Anna Olson had 20 set assists for MSUM, while senior
Katy Ness had 16 digs. Senior
Heidi Lensing had nine kills and senior
Meredith Egeland had eight. All four were playing the final matches of their Dragon career.
During their five-match winning streak to end the year, MSUM lost just one set.
"I believe that ending the season on a five-match winning streak is good momentum for going into next season," MSUM head coach
Tammy Blake said. "I thought our seniors led the team extremely well these past five matches and I am excited they could end their careers on a win."
The Dragons had to battle through a competitive first set before prevailing. They trailed 16-15 before scored three straight points -- including kills by sophomores
Maggie Gruber and
Annie Palmquist -- to take an 18-16 lead. The lead stood at 19-18 before MSUM went on a 4-0 run -- sparked by two block assists by Gruber and kills from Lensing and Gruber -- to strech the lead to 23-18. The Dragons went on to win 25-20.
The second set was close as well as it tied at 15-15 midway through. However, a 5-0 Dragon run -- sparked by three kills and a block assist from VanWinkle -- gave MSUM a 20-15 lead. Bemidji State never got closer as the Dragons rolled to a 25-19 win.
MSUM had an easier time in the final set. They stormed out to an 11-3 lead, with Lensing accounting for two kills and two block assists from freshman
Abby Wolpern during that run. Bemidji State state got as close as 20-15, but the Dragons closed the set on a 5-2 run to earn a 25-17 win. Egeland and Lensing had two kills each as MSUM finished off the sweep.
Freshman
Casie Baer had eight assists and three digs for MSUM, while Lensing had nine digs. Egeland and Gruber had five block assists while freshman
Kaitlin VanWinkle had five kills, five digs, a solo block and three assists.
