Dragons Basketball: Last NSIC Road Weekend of Season

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon basketball teams look to continue their win streaks as they prepare for their last road weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The team's will be in Winona, Minn. on Friday, Feb. 17 with the women tipping off against the Winona State University Warriors at 6 p.m. followed by the men. On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Dragons will face the Upper Iowa University Peacocks in Fayette, Iowa. The women start at 6 p.m. with the men at 8 p.m.

DRAGON WOMEN
The Dragon women (13-9, 10-8 NSIC) are No. 7 in the NSIC and extended their win streak to seven after defeating the Bemidji State University Beavers in a heart pounding triple overtime win, 95-93.

The Dragons trailed by 11 at the end of the first half, after a made jumper by sophomore guard, Haley Thomforde. In the second, the Dragons trailed by as much as 14 but they never gave up. Marisa Yernatich sparked an 18-9 run with a 3-pointer to tie up the game only four minutes into the period. With only 20 seconds remaining in the game, the Dragons had a two-point lead. But with only five second left, Kate Warmack hit a jumper inside the paint to tie up the game and send it to overtime.

During the first overtime period, both teams only scored on free-throws, leaving the score tied at 81 as time ran out. In double overtime, the Beavers had a three-point lead over the Dragons, but Yernatich answered again with a shot from behind the arc to send the game into triple overtime.

The Beavers came out fast in the third overtime, hitting a three and taking the lead. But the Beavers were not able to hold off the Dragons. With only eight seconds left, senior guard Brittany Mayclin made a jumper, giving the Dragons the victory.

Five players scored in double digits in the Dragon victory. Forward Angie Jetvig led the team and all scorers with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Yernatich and Megan Strese each added 13 points, center Taylor Shepard went 4-of-5 from the field for 12 points and sophomore guard Haley Thomforde rounded out the Dragon scorers with 10 points.

Angie Jetvig leads the Dragons wtih 17.6 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game. She is No. 2 in the NSIC for scoring and leads the conference in rebounds per game. Her free-throw percentage of .893 is also No. 1 in the NSIC.

Jetvig is 8th in the nation for her free-throw percentage, 23rd in rebounds per game and 35th in poinits per game.

DRAGON MEN
The Dragon men (17-5, 13-5 NSIC) have continued their winning ways as well, building their win streak to four and moving up one spot in the conference to No. 2.

The Dragons took the lead early in their last bout against the Bemidji State University Beavers. Led by the strong 3-point shooting, hitting 7-of-10, the Dragons had an eight-point lead at the end of the first period.

In the second period, the Beavers made a come back, and threated the take the game from the Dragons. But a made 3-pointer from Charlie Chapman with only eight seconds remaining, the Dragon and Beavers were headed to overtime. MSU Moorhead scored 15 points to the Beavers 10 points, giving them a seven-point victory, 84-77.

DJ Hamilton shone in the Dragon victory posting a career high of 34 points, going 9-of-18 from the field, seven rebounds and three assists. Chapman and Novak were also in double digits for the Dragons. Chapman had 17 points, hitting 4-of-9 from the 3-point line and Alex Novak added a double double of 14 points and 16 rebounds.

Novak leads the Dragons and the NSIC with 8.8 rebounds per game, a field goal percentage of .667 per game and is fouth in the conference with 1.68 blocks per game. Novak's 8.8 rebounds per game is tied for 36th in the nation.

WINONA WOMEN
The Winona State women (15-9, 10-8 NSIC) are on a two game win streak after most recently defeating Upper Iowa University in a big win, 100-60. The Warriors are one spot ahead of the Dragons in the NSIC at No. 6.  

The Warriors took command of the game from the start, building a 12-point lead by the end of the first period. In the second period, the Warriors came out on fire, outscoring the Peacocks, 53-25, giving them the win.

Four players scored in double digits for the Warriors. Michelle McDonald led the team and all scorers with 32, going 13-of-14 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line, to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists. Other contributors for the Warriors were Becca Friestleben with 18 points and Kelsey Andrist and Michelle Tobin added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

WINONA MEN
The Winona men (22-2, 17-1 NSIC) are the No. 5 team in the NSIC and No. 3 in the nation. The Warriors are on an 11 game win streak after defeating Upper Iowa University, 86-58, on Feb. 11.

The Warriors led the Peacocks from start to finish. Winona scored 40 points in the first period to the Peacocks 24, giving them a 16-point lead. The Warriors strong play continued throughout the half, outscoring Upper Iowa by 12, giving them the 28-point victory.

Five Warrior players scored in double figures on the night. Zander Culver led the team and all scored with 21 points and three assists. Jon Walburg was next for the Warriors with 15 points. Taylor Cameron and CJ Erickson both chipped in 11 points while Joel Armstrong added 10 points of his own.

UPPER IOWA WOMEN
The Upper Iowa women (2-20, 2-16 NSIC) are No. 14 in the NSIC and on a four game losing streak.

The Peacocks last battled the Winona State Warriors, falling 60-100. Senior guard Jeri Jacobson led the Peacocks with 18 total points, hitting 3-of-6 from the field. Freshman forward Whitney Kieffer added 10 points for the Peacocks along with eight rebounds and five assists.

UPPER IOWA MEN
The Upper Iowa men (7-15, 4-14 NSIC) are No. 13 in the conference and on a five game losing streak.

On Feb. 11, Upper Iowa faced off with No. 3 Winona, falling 58-86. Junior forward Sam Elgin led the Peacocks for the night with 12 total points and five rebounds. Freshman guard Bo Pagel posted 10 points and four rebounds for UIU.  

The Matchup
The Dragon men and women meet with the Warriors and the Peacocks for the second time this season. On Jan. 13 the Dragon women defeated the Peacocks, 60-49.  Angie Jetvig led the Dragons with 23 points and nine rebounds followed by Megan Strese with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

On Jan. 14 the Dragons fell to the Warriors, 61-69.  Marisa Yernatich led the Dragons for the night with 18 totals points going 5-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc. Strese was behind Yernatich with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Dragons and Warriors women are meeting for the 68th time. MSU Moorhead leads the series over Winona State, 41-26. Upper Iowa and MSU Moorhead will be meeting for only the 12th time. The Dragons lead the series 11-0.

The Dragon men took a close overtime victory over the Peacocks when they last meet on Jan. 13 in Moorhead. With a score of 58-58 at the end of regulation, the game went into overtime, where the Dragons outscored the Peacocks by two, giving them the 70-68 victory. Charlie Chapman and Alex Novak paced the Dragons in the win with 16 points apiece.

On Jan. 14 the Dragons fell to the No. 3 Warriors, 76-63. The game was close at halftime, with MSU Moorhead only trailing by two, but strong shooting for Winona State helped them pull away and take the victory. Jake Lindfors led the Dragons on the night with 21 points and five rebounds.

This will be the 150th meeting between the Dragons and the Warriors men. The Warriors lead the close series 79-60. MSUM leads the series over the Peacocks 8-5 and will be meeting for the 14th time in school history.

Alumni Night
Alumni Night will take place at the Dragon games on Feb. 24 against Augustana (S.D.). The women start at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.  Wear Dragon apparel to the game for an admission price of $3. The Alumni office will have t-shirts for sale along with an alumni table featuring tattoos and face painting. Games Galore will also have two inflatable games for kids to play on.
