MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Dragon men and women's basketball teams are back on the road this weekend after both teams swept at home against the Northern State Wolves and the University of Mary Marauders on Feb. 3 and 4.
On Friday, Feb. 10 the Dragons travel to the University of Minnesota, Duluth to take on the Bulldogs with the women tipping off at 6 p.m. followed by the men. On Feb. 11 the Dragons continue their road weekend in Bemidji, Minn. against Bemidji Sate University starting with the women at 4 p.m. and the men at 6 p.m.
DRAGON WOMEN
The Dragon women (11-9, 8-8 NSIC) continued their success this last weekend stretching their win streak to five and moving up one spot in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference to No. 7.
The Dragons most recent victory came against University of Mary No.3 in the NSIC. Both teams showed off their ability to get to the rim with a high scoring game of, 98-92. The Dragons took the lead after 45 seconds of play and held it throughout the game, leading by 13 at the half. With only a minute left to play, the Marauders cut a once 23-point Dragon lead to a three-point lead. But the Dragons were able to hold off the Marauders in their final attempts to take a six-point victory.
Five players shone for the Dragons, scoring in double digits. Senior guard
Brittany Mayclin led the Dragons with 20 points, eight assists and five rebounds, and hit 4-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc.
Angie Jetvig followed behind Mayclin with 19 points and nine big rebounds.
Megan Strese added another double double to her stat book with 15 points and 10 rebounds; junior guard
Marisa Yernatich added 15 points as well.
Morgan Zabel rounded out the double-digit scores for the Dragons with 14 points.
Jetvig still leads the team with a double double of 17.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. In the NSIC she is second in scoring by only .5 points per game and first in rebounds.
DRAGON MEN
The Dragon men (15-5, 11-5 NSIC) snapped their four game losing streak and moved back into the No. 3 spot in the NSIC last weekend by sweeping at home.
On Saturday, Feb. 4 the Dragons took a one-point decision against the University of Mary Marauders, 67-66. The lead bounced back and fourth between the two teams throughout the first half, and the Marauders had the edge in the first period, leading the Dragons by three. In the second half, U Mary appeared to have control of the game, leading by as much as nine. But with only two minutes left to play, the Dragons regained the one point lead and were able to hold off for the victory.
Charlie Chapman led the Dragon scorers with 17 points and had three assists. Junior Forward
Alex Novak was next with a double double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward
Xavier Reed was a key player for the Dragons, scoring eight points, including the go-ahead basket with only 1:16 left in regulation.
Chapman leads the team in points per game with 13.2 and Novak is the team leader and first in the NSIC with 8.4 rebounds per game.
DULUTH WOMEN
The Bulldog Women (13-7, 10-6 NSIC) will be the toughest game for the Dragons this weekend as the No.4 team in the NSIC. They are one a two-game win streak after defeating the University of Mary and Bemidji State University this past weekend.
The Bulldogs defeated the Beavers of Bemidji State University on Saturday, Feb. 4 on their home court, 60-39. The Bulldogs controlled the entire game, building a substantial 18-point lead by the half. In the second half, the Bulldogs continued their strong play, boasting a 31-point lead only half way through the period. The Beavers were able to make a small run, cutting the lead by 10, to fall by 21 total points as time expired.
Sophomore guard Katrina Newman led the Bulldogs and all scorers with a double double, 16 points and 13 rebounds. Courtney Doucette was next on the team with 11 total points and seven rebounds. Newman leads the team in point per game and rebounds per game with 14.2 and 8.8, respectively.
DULUTH MEN
The Bulldog men (12-8, 9-7 NSIC) are now No. 7 in the NSIC and on a one game-losing streak, falling to Bemidji State on Feb. 4, 93-85.
The Beavers led the Bulldogs throughout the game, starting it off with a 6-0 run. Bemidji had accumulated a 13-point lead by the break, which continued to build throughout the second half. As time started to wind down the Bulldogs made a small run, pulling within four at one point, but they were unable to swing the lead their way and lost by eight points.
Duluth had four players score in double digits on the night. Brett Ervin led the way with 26 points, shooting 10-of-16 from the field. Riley Walker was another key contributor with 17 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Ryan Rassmussen and Jake Hottenstine with 15 and 14 points, respectively.
BEMIDJI WOMEN
The Bemidji State University Beaver women (8-13, 6-10 NSIC) are on a one game losing streak and are sitting No. 10 in the conference.
The Beavers fell to Duluth in a tough game 39-60 on Saturday, Feb. 4. Lee Morgan was the lone double-digit scorer for the Beavers with 16 total points and four rebounds.
Lee leads BSU in scoring with 13 point per game average and Kate Warmack is on top with 6.7 rebounds per game.
BEMIDJI MEN
The Beaver men have an identical conference record are right behind the Dragon men in the NSIC at No. 4 with a record of 16-6, 11-5 NSIC.
The Beavers are on a one game win streak after defeating the Bulldogs on the University of Minnesota Duluth this last Saturday, Feb. 4. The Beavers led the Bulldogs the whole game, taking an eight-point victory, 93-85.
The Beavers had four players score in double digits as well. Dermaine Crockrell led all scorers with 27 total points, six assists and four rebounds. James Ellisor also eclipsed the 20-point mark with 21 total points and five rebounds. Lance Rongstad and Bryce Tesdahl were other key contributors with 18 and 10 points, respectively.
The Match-Up
This will be the second time this season both the Dragon men and women take on the Bulldogs and Beavers. Earlier this season, on Dec. 2, 2011 the Dragons lost a close battle to the Beavers, 68-75.
Megan Strese led the team in scoring with 14 points and had eight rebounds in the game.
On Dec. 3, 2011 the Bulldogs came to Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse to battle the Dragon women, and fell, 63-61. In the game,
Angie Jetvig led the team with 11 points.
Haley Thomforde and Strese each added 10 points in the game as well.
The MSUM and Bemidji women with be meeting for the 90th time on Friday. The Dragons leads the series over the Beavers 51-38. The Dragons also lead the series over UMD, 47-25. The upcoming game will be the 73rd meeting for the two teams.
The Dragon men took home big victories earlier this season against the Beavers and the Bulldogs. On Dec. 2, 2011 the MSUM defeated BSU by 20 points, 77-57. Senior guard
DJ Hamilton led all scores on the night with 27 points and had five assists.
On Dec. 3, 2011 the Dragons repeated their success and defeated the Bulldogs by an 18-point margin, 85-67. Hamilton again led the team and all scorers with 28 points, three rebounds and two assists.
The Dragon men also lead both all time series against the Beavers and Bulldogs. This will be the 172nd meeting between MSUM and BSU, the Dragons lead the close series 88-83. The Dragons are on top of the Bulldogs 76-35 and they will be facing off for the 112th time.
