Dragon Softball Opens NSIC Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Softball team competed in their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game in a double header today against Upper Iowa University. The Dragons split with the Peacocks, winning the first 1-0, and falling 11-3 in the second.

The Dragons totaled eight hits and one error in their first game victory. The Dragons lone run came in the bottom of the second inning. AJ Hoefer led off the inning with a walk. Amanda Moore came to the plate next for the Dragons. She nearly knocked one out of the park to right field, earning her a triple and an RBI as Hoefer scored, makings the score 1-0.

The Peacocks made a run at the lead in the top of the seventh inning. After Bailee Haberman led off the inning with a walk. Missy Olson stepped up to the plate next, grounding out on a sac bunt, but advancing Haberman to second. Following a hit that advanced Haberman to third, Hailley Hanging reached on a fielder's choice. Haberman tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate, giving the Dragons the crucial second out. Erin Van Praag flew out to the short stop to end the inning and the game.

Moore led the Dragons, hitting 3-of-3 from the plate along with one RBI. Freshman pitcher Amanda Lynch earned her first NSIC victory as a Dragon.

In game two of the day, the Peacocks came out for pay back, starting the battle with two hits and one run in the bottom of the first inning. After earning another run in the top of the third inning to make the score 0-2, the Dragons answered with two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2. Megan Vargo scored off of a Hoefer single to right field, followed by Brittany York scoring on a passed ball.

The Dragons and Peacocks were both scoreless in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, the Peacocks regained their lead, scoring two more runs on RBI's from Mnichowicz and Haberman. The Dragons scored one run in the bottom of the fifth after a York sac fly to right, making the score 4-3.

The Peacocks shut out the Dragons and scored seven more runs in the final two innings to give them the victory with a final score of 11-3. Outfielders Paige Smith and Miranda Bronson led the offensive attack for the Dragons hitting 3-of-3 and 2-of-4, respectively. Brandi Howell and Alexa D'Onofrio both pitched for the Dragons in the game.

The Dragons continue NSIC action tomorrow at home against the Winona State Warriors in a double header starting at noon.
