MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball team hosted the Winona State Warriors today continuing Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Dragons went 0-2 in the double header against the Warriors.
In game one of the double header the Warriors got an early jump on the Dragons, winning the game 11-1. After six hits, four walks and one Dragon error, the Warriors scored eight runs in the first inning. The Warriors scored one more run off two hits in the second inning to make the score 9-0.
The Dragons were held scoreless in the first two innings. But after two hits in the third, the team scored one run off of a long bomb to left field by catcher Brittany York.
The Warriors scored two more runs in the bottom of the third, giving them the 11-1 advantage. The game was over after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
York led the Dragons hitting 1-of-2 with one RBI. Brandi Howell was the starting pitcher and gave up 13 hits.
In game two of the double header the Warriors had another strong start, scoring six runs off five hits in the first inning. The Dragons were held hitless in the first, but added one hit each in the next two innings.
In the fourth inning the Warriors had seven more hits, scoring six runs to give them a 12-0 lead. The big run inning included a three run homer over the center field fence from Jessica Kullmann.
The Dragons led of the bottom of the fourth inning with a walk for Moriah Burns following a ground out by Amanda Moore. Sam Adolph came up to the plate next, sending a monster hit to left field scoring Burns to put the Dragons of the board 12-1. After an error by the shortstop the Dragons had two runners on base for Paige Smith. Smith sent another long ball to the center field fence, scoring two more runs. The Dragons entered the fifth inning behind 12-3.
Both the Dragons and the Warriors were held scoreless in the final innings of the game, making the final score 12-3 in favor of the Warriors.
The Warriors totaled 14 hits in the game from pithers Amanda Lynch and Alexa D'Onofrio. The Dragons had six total hits as a team and were led by center fielder Paige Smith who hit 2-of-2 from the plate and had two RBI's
The Dragons next action will be in Duluth, Minn. on March 28 against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in a double header starting at noon.
