MINNETONKA, Minn. – When the Minnesota State University Moorhead tennis team took a trip to Minnetonka, Minn., Saturday, they came away with a sweep on the day and on the weekend.
The Dragons, 4-8 overall and 4-4 in the Northern Sun, swept the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs, 9-0. Through the singles competition the most points yielded in a match was five. The doubles action was more closely competed with the Dragons prevailing.
Senior
Kayla Huether (7-4 No. 1 spot) began the singles action against Angie Wiegmann. The Brainerd, Minn., native held Wiegmann to one point in each set to take the match 6-1, 6-1.
Alyse Grelson (3-4 No. 2 spot, 2-2 No. 3 spot) soon followed against Katie Kienitz. Grelson was able to keep the early momentum with the Dragons by grabbing a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Kathryn Neubauer (2-0 No. 3 spot, 2-2 No. 2 spot) performed in her second match since her nearly one month hiatus and did not skip a beat. She put up the same final score as her previous teammate, 6-1, 6-2, over Allison Niedert.
As the bottom half of the singles action was underway, Jenna Beth Galstad (3-3 No. 4 spot, 1-3 No. 3 spot) allowed just one point. She was able to take down Katie Carlson 6-1, 6-0.
Jaime LaCoursiere (3-2 No. 5 spot , 0-5 No. 4 spot) defeated Ashley Plucker 6-3, 6-2.
Kaitlin McNary (3-2 No. 6 spot, 0-5 No. 5 spot) finished singles action by allowing just one point. The Mustangs' Maria Lindberg only scored in the first set as the Dragon took the match 6-1, 6-0.
Doubles competition began the same as singles ended. Huether and Grelson (6-5 No. 1 doubles) took the first match with ease, 8-1. LaCoursiere and Galstad (1-6 No. 2 doubles) allowed six points to their Mustang opponents but were able to keep the sweep alive with a 8-6 match win. The finish the sweep on the day, McNary and Tiffany Kapalszynski (2-5 No. 3 doubles earned a 8-6 victory.
The Dragons continue NSIC action on March 30 when they will face the St. Cloud State Huskies. MSUM will host SCSU with matches beginning at 6 p.m.
