DULUTH, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball team traveled to Duluth, Minn., Wednesday to face the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in a double-header. The Bulldogs won both games, 5-1 and 11-3.
In game one, the Bulldogs got off to an early start, posting two hits and two runs on the bottom of the second inning. Both teams were scoreless and hitless in the third inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, center fielder Paige Smith led off by sending a long ball over the right field fence to put the dragons on the board, 1-2. However, the Bulldogs answered with another two runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 1-4 lead.
The Dragons went scoreless the rest of the game, matching up with one more run from the Bulldogs in the bottom of the sixth inning, making the final score 1-5.
In game two of the day it was the Dragons who came out on fire, scoring three runs in the first inning. Smith led off for the team with a single to right center field. The next two batters were out, and then the Dragon power hitters stepped up to the plate. AJ Hoefer and Amanda Moore homered to left and right field one after the other, giving the Dragons a 3-0 lead.
However, those were the team's only three runs of the game. The Bulldogs went scoreless until the third inning, where the posted eight runs, including a two run homer. The Bulldogs scored one run an inning for the remainder of the game, taking the win 3-11.
Smith led the Dragons in game one, who went 1-of-3 from the plate with one RBI. Smith had the only hit of the game for the Dragons. Freshman Amanda Lynch was the starting pitcher for the Dragons in the game.
In game two, Moore and Hoefer led the Dragons. Moore went 2-of-3 from the plate with one RBI and Hoefer went 1-of-2 with one RBI. Brandi Howell and Alexa D'Onofrio both pitched for the Dragons in the game.
The Dragons are on the road again this weekend against Minnesota State University-Mankato on Sat. March 31 and Southwest Minnesota State University on Sun. April 1.
