MARSHALL, Minn. – The No. 13 Minnesota State University – Mankato Mavericks swept the MSU Moorhead Dragon softball team Saturday afternoon, winning 16-1 and 9-1.
The Dragons scored their only run of game one in the first inning. Center fielder Paige Smith led off with a triple. Next up, Miranda Bronson, sac flied to center field and scored Smith for a RBI. The Dragons left the Mavericks hit-less in the first inning.
In the second inning, the Dragons earned two walks, but both runners were left on base. In the bottom of the second the Mavericks had a monster inning to put them on top of the Dragons 8-1. After the led off batter reached on an outfielder error, the Mavericks had seven hits, including four doubles and one home run, to score the eight runs.
After holding the Dragons to only one hit in the next two innings, the Mavericks fired up their bats once more to post another eight run seven hit inning. After the Dragons were unable to score in the top of the fifth, the game ended after four innings.
Smith had both hits for the Dragons, going 2-of-3 and scoring one run. Bronson had the only RBI for the Dragons. Alexa D'Onofrio and Brandi Howell both pitched for the Dragons, giving up 17 hits in the 27 batters faced.
In game two of the double-header, the score sat at 0-0 after the first inning. In the second inning Taylor Huss put the Dragons on the board after an RBI double, scoring Brittany York who had walked. The Mavericks answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second.
The Mavericks continued their strong offense, scoring three runs in the third, five in the fourth and one in the fifth to make the score 9-1 after five innings. The Dragons who were scoreless and hitless fell after five innings.
Huss led the Dragons in game two, hitting 1-of-2 with an RBI. Moriah Bruns also added a hit for the Dragons, going 1-of-2.
The Dragons next action will be tomorrow, April 1 at Southwest Minnesota State University at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
