MARSHALL, Minn. – The Dragon softball team ended their weekend road trip against the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs this afternoon in a double header. The Dragons fell to the Mustangs 1-4 and 4-12.
Game 1
Both the Dragons and Mustangs opened the game with strong defense with neither pitcher allowing a hit in the first inning. The Dragons opened the second inning with two fly outs. Moriah Burns came to the plate next and got on base after getting hit by a pitch. After a long bomb double to center field by Taylor Huss, Burns scored, giving the Dragons their lone run of the game.
The Dragons led the game 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth, when the Mustangs scored three runs off three hits to put them on top. Unable to answer the Mustang attack, the Dragons went scoreless in the following two innings, leading to a final score of 1-4.
Game 2
In the second outing, the Dragons jumped out to the lead early, capitalizing on a Mustang error and a home run by Amanda Moore. The Mustangs answered with a run of their in the bottom of the inning.
In the top of the third inning, the Dragons scored yet another two runs off of a double by Miranda Bronson down the right field line, giving MSU a three run advantage. The Dragons appeared to have the game in their hands until a late Mustang attack. In the bottom of the fifth, SMSU posted seven runs giving them a 12-4 lead and ending the game after five innings.
Today's losses move the No. 13 Dragons to 5-20, 1-9 NSIC for the season, and the Mustangs take sole position of the No. 4 spot in the conference with a record of 16-10 overall and 7-3 NSIC.
The Dragons travel to Bemidji, Minn. on Wednesday, April 4 to take on the No. 14 Bemidji State University Beavers (7-20, 0-10 NSIC).
