Softball vs. UMC Gallery
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball team swept the University of Minnesota, Crookston Golden Eagles in dramatic fashion on April 11, winning game one 13-0 in five innings and coming back late in the seventh to win game two, 6-5.
Game 1
The Dragons started scoring early in game one, producing five runs in the first inning. The team went through the entire batting order in the bottom of the first, with runs coming off a two-run homer from
Taylor Huss and RBI doubles from
Amanda Moore and
Brittany York.
The Dragons continued the scoring-palooza throughout the remainder of the game. In the bottom of the second inning
Sam Adolph and Huss had an RBI single apiece.
AJ Hoefer batted in the lone run for the Dragons in the third inning followed by another five run inning in the fourth.
Miranda Bronson, York, Hoefer, Moore and Huss all contributed RBI's in the final inning.
Sophomore pitcher
Brandi Howell was the winning pitcher for the Dragons. She pitched all five innings, giving up only five hits and two walks in the 19 batters she faced. Howell held the Golden Eagles scoreless to earn her first shutout win.
Game 2
In game two the Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when
Paige Smith scored on a passed ball. The Dragons held the lead until the top of the third when the Golden Eagles tied the game off two hits. Both teams scored two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth, keeping things tight, 4-4.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Golden Eagles rallied for four hits and scored one run to take a 5-4 lead. The Dragons who were held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh to take the game.
Right fielder
Mollie Annen led off the inning for the Dragons with a blooper over the head of the third basemen. Annen advanced to second off a sac bunt. Bronson drove Annen home off an RBI double to right field to tie the game, 5-5. Hoefer continued her strong hitting when she stepped up to the plate looking to avoid extra innings. The senior launched a double to right center field to score Bronson and to give the Dragons the walk-off victory, 6-5.
Howell was the winning pitcher again in game 2, closing out the final 3 innings while giving up 6 hits in 14 batters faced.
The Dragons continue play at home this weekend in double headers on April 14 and 15 against Wayne State College and Augustana College (S.D.).
