MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball team honored their seniors as they hosted the Wayne State College Wildcats on Saturday, April 14. The Wildcats and Dragons split with WSC winning game one 6-0 and MSUM taking game two 6-0.

Game 1
Brandi Howell opened the game on the mound for the Dragons. Earning four walks and one hit, the Wildcats took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The Dragons were hitless in the bottom of the first.

The Wildcats were scoreless in the second inning but added two runs in the top of the third.  The Dragons answered with a hit in the bottom of the inning but were unable to convert for runs.

The Wildcats scored one more run in the top of the seventh inning to round out the rally. The Dragons posted a single hit in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings but left all four runners on base. The Wildcats took game one, 6-0.

Game 2
AJ Hoefer led things off for the Dragons in game two with a stand-up triple on two outs in the bottom of the first inning. In the first two innings both teams were scoreless.

Leading off the bottom of the third inning with an out, the Dragons rallied for three singles in a row from Paige Smith, Miranda Bronson and Hoefer. Hoefer scored Smith and Bronson on her single up the middle and advanced to second on an attempt to throw Bronson out at home. Brittany York batted in Hoefer on an error from the Wildcat shortstop giving the Dragons a 3-0 lead at the end of the third.

Mollie Annen led things off for the Dragons in the bottom of the fourth with a walk. The Wildcats again walked the next batter, Smith, but the fourth ball by the Wildcat pitcher was wild and allowed Annen to advance to third. Annen scored on another wild pitch when Bronson was at the plate, building the Dragon lead to 4-0.

The Dragons brought in two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two runners in scoring position, Moriah Bruns grounded out to the shortstop but scored Megan Vargo and earned an RBI. Smith added the second RBI in the inning after a single to left field.  The Dragons shut out the Wildcats in the seventh to win the game, 6-0. Junior Alexa D'Onofrio was the winning pitcher for the Dragons.

The three seniors honored today were AJ Hoefer of Annandale, Minn., Sam Adolph from St. Paul, Minn., and Paige Smith of Gretna, Manitoba.

The Dragons return to Nemzek Field on April 15 to host a double-header against the No. 21 Augustana College (S.D.) Vikings at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
