Dragons vs. Augustana 04.16.12 Gallery
MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball team hosted the No. 21 Augustana College Vikings on Monday, April 16. The game was rescheduled from April 15 due to rain. The Vikings won both games, 13-0 and 8-1.
Game 1
The No. 21 Vikings were hot early in game one. In the top of the first inning, the team posted four hits and four runs to take an early lead. The Vikings added three runs in the top of the second followed by five more runs in the top of the third.
Dragon pitcher, Brandi Howell, held the Vikings hitless in the top of the fourth inning. With a little steam left Augustana topped of the game with one final run in the fifth inning, building a 13-0 lead.
The Dragons earned their first hit in the bottom of the seventh inning from Taylor Huss. Sam Adolph followed Huss with a walk. However, with two runners on base the Dragons were unable to convert for runs before the end of the inning. The Vikings took the victory after five innings, 13-0.
Game 2
In game two both teams were quiet in the first couple innings. Neither MSUM nor Augie posting a hit until the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth inning the Vikings got on the board and took a 1-0 lead. The Dragons responded with two hits in the bottom of the fourth but both runners were left on base.
The Vikings scored three runs in both the top of the fifth and sixth innings, taking a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth the Dragons responded with a run. Moriah Burns led off the inning with a single up the middle. A pitch hit Paige Smith next, putting runners on first and second for the Dragons. Miranda Bronson was able to reach on a fielder's choice, loading the bases for AJ Hoefer. Hoefer was walked, scoring a run and receiving an RBI. The Dragons left three runners on base in the inning.
With the score 7-1 in the top of the seventh, the Vikings tacked on yet another run on a double to the center field fence, building a 8-1 lead. The Dragons went hitless in the bottom of the seventh, ending the game 8-1 in favor of the Vikings.
The Dragons will host the Jamestown College Jimmes on Wednesday, April 18 in the last home game of the season. The double header will be held at 12 and 2 p.m.
