ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon softball team fell short in both games of a double header on April 22. The St. Cloud State University Huskies defeated the Dragons, 7-1 and 3-2.
Game 1
The Huskies were the first team on the board, posting two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Dragon pitcher, Brandi Howell, held the Huskies scoreless with only one hit in the fourth and fifth innings.
The Huskies came out hot in the bottom of the sixth inning. SCSU posted five runs in the inning, four coming off two two-run homeruns.
The Dragons responded with one hit from centerfielder Paige Smith, scoring Sam Adolph in the top of the seventh inning. But the Huskies strong defense ended the inning before the Dragons could start a rally, winning 7-1.
Game 2
In the encore the Huskies jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. They held that lead until the top of the third inning when the Dragons scored Smith off an RBI single from Miranda Bronson, tying the game, 1-1.
After a scoreless third inning for the Huskies, the Dragons added another run to their total in the top of the fourth. A solo homerun from Amanda Moore gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead. However, the Huskies tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Dragons left four combined runners on base in the fifth and sixth innings. After MSUM was unable to convert their lone hit in the top of the seventh for a run, SCSU's right fielder Bobbi Boomgarden launched a walk-off homer, ending the game, 3-2, in favor of the Huskies.
The Dragons travel to St. Paul, Minn., to take on the Concordia University Golden Bears on April 23. The double-headers will be played at 12 and 2 p.m. The game, originally scheduled for April 22, was pushed back due to rain.
