Dragons Hit Two Home Runs to Close Weekend Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon Softball team jumped out to two early leads in the double-header against Northern State University but late spurts from the Wolves gave them the 12-4 and 11-6 victories.

Game 1
Senior AJ Hoefer put the Dragons on the board in the bottom of the first inning in game one after launching a two-run homerun over the center field fence. Sophomore pitcher Brandy Howell held the Wolves scoreless in the first and second innings but NSU got the bats going in the top of the third, taking a 5-2 lead.

The Dragons responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, making the score 5-4, with RBI's coming from Hoefer and Amanda Moore.  But the Wolves were just getting started. They scored another four runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth, making the score 12-4, ending the game after five innings.

Game 2
The Dragons were the first to post runs in game two as well, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second from a Taylor Huss two-run home run.  Both the Dragons and the Wolves posted two runs apiece in the third inning, giving the Dragons a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Wolves matched the Dragons yet again, bringing in two more runs to tie the game, 4-4. The Dragons were silent in the fourth which the Wolves capitalized on. NSU put five more runs on the board in the fifth inning, forcing a pitching change for the Dragons.

The Wolves, now leading 9-4, held the Dragons to only two hits and no runs in the fifth in sixth innings. In the final inning of play, the Wolves scored another two runs, building a seven-run lead. However, the Dragons still had some fight left. The team posted three hits and scored two more runs in the inning but fell short in the end, 11-6.

AJ Hoefer led the Dragons in game one, hitting 2-of-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's. In game two it was Huss that led the Dragons. The freshman hit 1-of-3 with two RBI's and one run.

The Dragons continue play at home on April 11 at 2 and 4 p.m. against the University of Minnesota, Crookston.
