MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Sophomore
Erin Nyberg's goal in overtime was the difference as the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team beat Wayne State, 4-3 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Moorhead, Minn. The Dragons improved to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the NSIC, while Wayne State fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Nyberg, who leads MSUM with four goals on the season, also scored the team's first goal of the contest. Sophomore
Isabel Neyman had a goal and an assist, while freshman
Sienna Rebollozo added a goal. Sophomore
Alyson Beare assisted on Nyberg's game-winning goal. Junior
Victoria Hoffman had eight saves for her first victory in net of the young season.
MSUM led 2-1 at halftime and 3-1 at one point in the second half before Wayne State rallied to tie the game with two goals. In overtime, Nyberg found the back of the net off of Beare's assist to give MSUM its second straight home win.
The Dragons had a 17-12 edge in shots.
MSUM struck first at the 17:16 mark when Nyberg fond the back of the net off of an assist from Neyman to take a 1-0 lead. The Dragons added to the lead a little more than seven minutes later when Neyman scored an unassisted goal at the 24:26 mark to make it 2-0.
Wayne State cut the lead in half when McKenna Adams scored a goal at the 25:13 mark.
MSUM had a 10-6 edge in shots at halftime.
The Dragons added to the lead in the second half when
Sienna Rebollozo scored an unassisted goal at the 54:32 mark, stretching the lead to 3-1. The Wildcats rallied to tie the game in the upcoming minutes to set the stage for overtime.
MSUM wraps up the weekend with a contest against NSIC foe Augustana on Sunday. Game time is 1 p.m. at the MSUM Soccer Field.
