MOORHEAD, Minn. - The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team battled tough in its 2012 home debut but fell short, dropping a 2-1 nonconference decision to St. Cloud State Sunday in Moorhead, Minn. The Dragons fell to 0-2 with the loss, while the Huskies improved to 1-0-1.
Shenae Morical scored her first goal of the season for the Dragons, while
Amanda Wurdeman added an assist.
Carole Braschayko had a game-high eight saves in net for MSUM.
Sophomore Erin Nyber had four shots – including two on goal – for MSUM, while Anne Hulteng also had two shots on goal. The Dragons held a 17-14 edge on shots in the game, including 10-7 in the second half.
The Huskies, who advanced to the NSIC tournament title game a year ago, got on the board first on a goal by Gabby Fleck at the 8:20 mark of the first half. Late in the half, the Dragons tied the score when Morical scored off of an assist from Wurdeman.
The score stayed that way until St. Cloud State's Kate Hanzlik found the back of the net at the 68:10 mark to break a 1-1 tie and give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.
The Dragons had several good scoring opportunities in the second half but were thwarted by SCSU goalkeeper Julia Clifford, who had five saves.
MSUM wraps up nonconference play Wednesday at home against Minnesota-Crookston for a 5 p.m. game. They open the NSIC season on Saturday at Northern State (S.D.).
