MSUM Men's Basketball Hits the Road to Face Beavers and Golden Eagles

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team begins a stretch of four consecutive road games this weekend when it plays at Bemidji State on Friday (8 p.m. tipoff) and Minnesota-Crookston on Saturday (6 p.m. start).

The Dragons (14-4, 8-4 NSIC) split a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games at home, rolling past Sioux Falls, 80-53 on Friday before losing to Southwest Minnesota State, 86-82 in overtime on Saturday. Bemidji State is 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the NSIC after falling at Winona State and Upper Iowa last weekend. Minnesota-Crookston is 3-13 overall and 0-12 in the league after being swept at Upper Iowa and Bemidji State.

MSUM leads the all-time series with Bemidji State 92-82; the Dragons rolled to an 82-48 win earlier this season in Moorhead. The Dragons lead the all-time series with Minnesota-Crookston, 27-9, including a 71-66 win over the Golden Eagles on Jan. 4 in Moorhead.

About MSUM
The Dragons split at home last weekend. Senior Alex Novak led the way 18 points in an 80-53 win over Sioux Falls on Jan. 18, while senior Anthony Tucker led the way with 30 points in an 86-82 OT loss to SMSU.

Tucker leads the Dragons at 20.7 points per game, a mark that is tied for 15th in all of Division II. He also leads the team in three-pointers (50) and assists (75). He is also shooting an impressive 87.8 percent (72-of-82) from the free-throw line. Senior Alex Novak is having a solid year at 12.6 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game. He also leads with 28 blocks. Sophomore Jordan Riewer averages 11.4 points per game for the Dragons, who average 76.4 points per game as a team and allow 66.4.  MSUM shoots 49.2 percent from the field.

Chad Walthall is in his third season at MSUM with a record of 50-26 at the school.

About Bemidji State
Bemidji State is 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the NSIC. The Beavers lost at Winona State (70-67) and Upper Iowa (81-67) in conference games last weekend.

Dermaine Crockrell leads Bemidji at 13.3 points per game, while Mason Walters is at 12.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Lance Rongstad is at 10.6 points per game and Zach Noreen at 10.5 points per game for the Beavers, who average 68.6 points per game and shoot 44.4 percent from the field. The Beavers allow 64.6 points per game.

Mike Boschee is in his first season as Bemidji's head coach with a record of 8-8 at the school.

About Minnesota-Crookston
The Golden Eagles are 3-13 overall and 0-12 in the NSIC; the Golden Eagles have lost 13 games in a row, including games at Upper Iowa (78-51) and Winona State (64-53) last weekend.

Brandon Burns leads Minnesota-Crookston at 11.5 points per game, while Almir Krdzalic is at 10.0 points per game. Abdou Niang leads the Golden Eagles at 5.1 points per game. As a team, Crookston shoots 42.9 percent from the floor and averages 57.7 points per game. The Golden Eagles allow 67.3 points per game.

Jeff Oseth is in his 11th season as Minnesota-Crookston's head coach with a record of 47-230 at the school.

Climbing the Charts
Senior Alex Novak is at 1,045 career points; he became the 26th Dragon player to surpass 1,000 for his MSUM career in the Dragons' win at Concordia. He is also at 916 rebounds and is the school's all-time record holder with 200 blocks.  Novak is also second all-time in the NSIC in career rebounds with 694; he trails all-time leader Gus Johnson of Winona State (819 rebounds) by 125 for that mark.
Tucker also surpassed 1,000 points for his college basketball career at Mankato and is at 1,062 points for his career, which includes time at Iowa and Winona State.

Preseason Poll
The Dragons were picked to win the NSIC North Division in the preseason coaches poll and were picked to finish fifth overall in the league.
