CROOKSTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team held Minnesota-Crookston to just 29.1 percent shooting in a 71-48 rout of the Golden Eagles in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Crookston, Minn.
MSUM improved to 15-5 overall and 9-5 in the NSIC, while the Golden Eagles, who have lost 15 in a row, fell to 3-15 overall and 0-14 in the league.
The 48 points the Dragons surrendered tied a season-low. MSUM also allowed only 48 points in an 82-48 rout of Bemidji State on Jan. 5. MSUM shot 41.5 percent from the field (22-of-53) while holding the Golden Eagels to just 16-of-55 shooting from the field. MSUM also dominated the boards, outrebounding Minnesota-Crookston 48-29.
Ten different MSUM players scored in the game, including three in double figures. Senior
Alex Novak had 14 points and three blocks for MSUM, while sophomore
Jordan Riewer added 14 points. Sophomore
Evan Holt added a career-high 10 points, while freshman
Ben Figini added a career-high 11 rebounds. Senior
Anthony Tucker added nine points, five rebounds and a team-best four assists for MSUM.
The Dragons faced a 19-15 deficit with 6:37 left in the first half but a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to surge into a 28-19 lead. Novak led the charge with four points, while sophomore
Tyler Vaughan and Holt added three and Riewer and senior
Eric Olson had two each. MSUM took a 29-21 lead into halftime.
The Dragons pushed their lead to double digits (36-21) with a 7-0 run over the first four minutes of the second half. Riewer had five points, including a three, while Novak added a layup.
MSUM never let the lead drop below 11 points the rest of the way. The Dragons' biggest lead was at 65-41 when freshman
Brady Wohler drained a pair of free throws with 2:19 left.
Wohler added nine points off the bench for MSUM.
The Dragons are in action on Feb. 1 at Upper Iowa.
