MSUM Women Return to Action This Week against Minnesota-Crookston and Bemidji State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team resumes action after a three-week break with a pair of home games this weekend. The Dragons will play host to Minnesota-Crookston at 6 p.m. Friday and cap off the weekend -- and four-game homestand -- against Bemidji State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

MSUM lost the first two games of the homestand to Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State on Dec. 14 and 15, respectively. Minnesota-Crookston and Bemidji State both split home games in their final action prior to the holiday break.

The Dragons hold a commanding 26-3 lead in the all-time series with Minnesota-Crookston.   The two teams split a year ago, each winning on the road. UMC beat the Dragons, 67-59 in Moorhead on Dec. 10, 2011 before MSUM prevailed in Crookston, 77-53.

MSUM and Bemidji State will meet for a 91st time in women's basketball, with the Dragons holding a 52-38 edge. The two teams split a year ago, with Bemidji winning in Moorhead, 75-68 and the Dragons winning in Bemidji, 95-93.

About MSUM
The Dragons (5-4, 2-3 NSIC) lost two games at home to Minnesota-Duluth (65-50) and St. Cloud State (79-56) on Dec. 14 and 15.  Junior Morgan Zabel led MSUM with 12 points against UMD, while senior Marisa Yernatich had 15 to pace the team against St. Cloud State.

Junior Megan Strese leads MSUM at 14.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game, while Yernatich is at 13.4 points per game and Zabel at 12.2. Junior Haley Thomforde leads at 3.2 assists per game. The Dragons score 65.1 points per game and shoot 37.8 percent from the field; they outrebound their opponent 41.6-36.0 and allow 61.4 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 13th season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 213-141.

About Minnesota-Crookston
Minnesota-Crookston is 4-5 overall and 1-4 in the NSIC.  The Golden Eagles split a pair of home games in their final action prior to the holiday break, beating Minot State, 66-46 before losing to Mary, 88-66.

Brittany Wiese leads the Golden Eagles at 13.6 points per game, while Ashley Martell is at 10.2. Laurie Tyson leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per game, while Wiese and Alex Thielman lead the team with 21 assists. As a team, UMC scores 67 points per game and allows 66.3. The Golden Eagles shoot 41.3 percent from the field but are being out rebounded by their opponents 39.2-37.2.

Mike Roysland is in his seventh season as UMC's head coach with a record of 57-131 at the school.

About Bemidji State
Bemidji State is 6-3 overall and 2-3 in the NSIC. The Beavers will play at Northern State on Friday prior to facing MSUM. In their last action prior to the holiday break, Bemidji State lost to Mary (78-63) but beat Minot State (63-51).

Lanae Rash leads Bemidji State at 14.6 points per game, while Morgan Lee is at 13 points pre game and Kate Warmack is at 10.1. Warmack leads at 7.3 rebounds, while Shannon Thompson leads at 34 assists.  The Beavers scored 70.1 points per game while allowing 69.7. They are close to even in rebounding, as they average 39.0 rebounds per game, compared to 39.7 for their opposition.

Mike Curfman, a one-time assistant coach at MSUM in the 1990s, is in his eighth season as Bemidji State's head coach with a record of 77-123 at the school.

Preseason Poll
MSUM was picked to finish 11th in the NSIC in a polling of the league's coaches. The Dragons were picked to finish fourth in the NSIC's North Division.

Yernatich Sets Three-Point Mark
Senior Marisa Yernatich has set the standard for three-point shooting during her career for MSUM, and has the record to prove it. Yernatich now has 155 three-pointers for her career and holds the all-time record.
