Molly Strong scored a goal in the 71st minute to bring Minnesota State University Moorhead within one goal, but the Dragons fell short as they fell to Minnesota-Crookston, 2-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's soccer Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.
The game was the first in the Highway 75 Rivalry Rock series. UMC, with the win, will take the traveling trophy and hold it until the next time the two teams meet in 2014.
Strong scored an unassisted goal at 70:54 to bring the Dragons within 2-1, but despite applying pressure late, were unable to tie the game.
Sophomore
Ashley Leintz had 11 saves for MSUM. Freshman
Jessica Johnson had four shots, including three on goal, while junior
Erin Nyberg had five shots, including two on goal. Strong had two shots on goal.
The Golden Eagles had a 22-16 edge in shots, including 13-10 on goal.
MSUM wraps up the weekend against Bemidji State. Game time is 1 p.m. on Sunday in Moorhead, Minn.
