MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Sophomore
Amber Krenske had 25 digs to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-9 win over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday at Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.
The Dragons (11-6, 4-5 NSIC) ended a four-match losing streak with the win, while Bemidji State fell to 5-12 overall and 1-8 in the NSIC.
Krenske also led the Dragons with two service aces. She leads the Dragons with a 5.11 digs per set average on the season.
MSUM hit a solid .248 for the match while limiting the Beavers to a .043 hitting percentage.
Junior
Maggie Gruber had 15 kills and hit .333 for the Dragons, while sophomore
Kaitlin VanWinkle had 12 kills and hit .750. Junior
Annie Palmquist had six kills. Sophomore
Abby Wolpern and Gruber each had four block assists, while VanWinkle had a solo block and three assists. Junior setter
Sam Sullivan had 25 set assists.
MSUM set the tone early with a big 11-2 run to open the first set. Gruber was the offensive catalyst with four kills, while VanWinkle had two block assists. The Dragons were never threatened in a 25-18 win. Gruber had five kills in the first set while Palmquist had four.
The second set was much closer, as the two teams were tied at 13-13. Back-to-back kills from VanWinkle put the Dragons up 15-13, and they never relinquished the lead after that, although Bemidji State cut the lead to 20-18 at one point. MSUM finished strong, however, with Gruber and VanWinkle each recording two kills during a final 5-2 run to help the Dragons seal a 25-20 win.
The Dragons controlled the third set, taking a 10-5 lead and never being challenged in a 25-9 win. Gruber provided the spark for MSUM with five kills.
Freshman
Katie Meyers had 12 digs for MSUM, while sophomore
Morgan Gradishar had 11.
The Dragons hit the road for a pair of NSIC matches next weekend, starting on Friday at No. 2-ranked Minnesota Duluth.
