ABERDEEN, S.D. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team was swept on the road on Tuesday as the Dragons fell to No. 25-ranked Northern State, 25-15, 25-17, 25-18 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action in Aberdeen, S.D.
MSUM fell to 12-8 overall and 5-7 in the NSIC with the loss, while Northern State improved to 16-3 overall and 9-3 in the league.
Freshman 
Brianna Atkins had a solid match for MSUM with nine kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Junior 
Annie Palmquist had six kills, while sophomores 
Kaitlin VanWinkle and 
Morgan Gradishar had five kills each. Junior 
Sam Sullivan had 15 set assists while sophomore 
Casie Baer had 11. Sophomore 
Amber Krenske had 12 digs while freshman 
Katie Meyers had nine.
The Wolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, but MSUM fought back to within 9-7 with a 7-4 run. Atkins, Baer and sophomore 
Abby Wolpern had kills during the run for MSUM.  Northern State answered with a 9-3 run to take an 18-10 lead and went on to take a 25-15 win.
In the second set, the Dragons trailed 11-3 but were able to close the gap to 17-11 after a Wolves' error. However, they got no closer and fell 25-17.
MSUM got off to a better start in the third set, taking a 6-3 lead. That early run was keyed from three kills from Atkins. The Wolves turned the table with an 8-2 run to take an 11-8 lead. Northern State built the lead to 17-12 but MSUM fought back to within 18-15. From there, however, the Wolves pulled away in a 25-18 win.
Northern State hit .262 for the night, compared to .091 for the Dragons. MSUM had 20 hitting errors compared to 12 for the Wolves.
MSUM is back in action on Friday at home against Upper Iowa. The match begins at 7 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Hall.
