FAYETTE, Iowa -- Junior
Erin Nyberg scored two goals, but the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's soccer team came up one goal short in a tough 4-3 loss to Upper Iowa in action Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.
MSUM fell to 0-9 overall and 0-7 in the NSIC with the loss, while Upper Iowa improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the league.
The Dragon offense broke through with a season-best three goals, paced by Nyberg's two, which tied a career-high. Freshman
Jessica Johnson added her first collegiate goal, while freshmen
Micah Palmer and
Gabrielle Bjorge each had assists.
"It was a great battle," MSUM head coach
Rollie Bulock said. "It is a good game for us to build on going into next weekend."
Upper Iowa scored the first two goals in the first 30 minutes to take a 2-0 lead. MSUM got on the board in the 36th minute when Nyberg scored off of an assist from Palmer to cut the Peacock lead to 2-1.
The Peacocks scored again early in the second half to take a 3-1 lead, but MSUM would respond. Johnson would score an unassisted goal at the 66:06 mark to cut the Upper Iowa lead to 3-2, and just minutes later, Nyberg, who now has 13 career goals, scored off of Bjorge's assist to tie the game at 3-3.
MSUM's day would end in heartbreaking fashion as Aimee Wronski scored with less than a minute left to make it 4-3, which ended up being the final tally.
Senior goalkeeper
Victoria Hoffman had seven saves for the Dragons.
MSUM is back in action on Saturday against Minnesota Crookston. The game is the first for the Highway 75 Rivalry Rock series and also is the Dragons' Cancer Awareness game.
