MINOT, N.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team outscored Minot State 29-15 over the final 11:43 to earn a 78-67 win over the Beavers in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday night in Minot, N.D.
MSUM improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the NSIC with the win. The start matches their best since 2011-12 when the Dragons started 11-0. Minot State fell to 5-2 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC.
Three Dragons scored in double figures in the game, led by junior guard
Prescott Williams with 15 points. He also added five rebounds and three assists. Sophomore guard
Ngijol Songolo tied a career-high with 14 points while senior
Tarell Clark had 11 points. Junior guard
Jordan Riewer added nine points and three assists for the Dragons.
MSUM shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field compared to 38.3 percent (23-of-60) for Minot State. The Dragons had a 44-40 edge in rebounds.
In a game that featured eight ties and 11 lead changes, the Dragons pulled away over the final 11 minutes. The Dragons were down 52-49 with 11:59 left before grabbing the momentum with a 10-2 run over a span of four minutes. Clark sparked the Dragons with five points – all coming from the free-throw line – while freshman forward
Aaron Lien added three.
The Dragons led 65-60 with 4:37 left and steadily pulled away, leading by as many as 12 in the final minutes on their way to their seventh straight win.
MSUM got off to a good start, pulling out to a 31-24 lead with 3:50 left in the first half after Songolo drained a three-pointer. Minot State closed the half on a 13-4 run to take a 37-35 lead into the break.
Clark and Williams each had eight points in the first half for MSUM while Riewer had six and senior forward
Taylor Filipek five.
Junior forward
Urbane Bingham added nine points off the bench for MSUM.
MSUM resumes action on Dec. 13 at home against Bemidji State. Game time is 8 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
