Dragon Men Look to Rebound at SCSU and UMD

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team competes in its final road weekend of the 2012-13 NSIC regular season when it plays at St. Cloud State (8 p.m. on Friday) and Minnesota-Duluth (6 p.m. on Saturday).

MSUM (16-8) is tied for third in the NSIC's North Division with Bemidji State; both teams have 10-8 conference marks. St. Cloud State (17-5) leads the north with a 13-5 record. UMD is 5-17 overall and 3-15 in the league.

The Dragons will meet St. Cloud State for a 121st time, with the Huskies holding an 82-39 series edge. MSUM won the meeting earlier in the regular season, 78-74 at Nemzek Hall.  UMD holds a 76-37 lead in the all-time series with the Dragons, although MSUM won the meeting earlier this year, 79-76.

About MSUM
The Dragons split at home last weekend, beating Augustana, 79-62, on Friday, thanks to 22 points from senior Anthony Tucker, before losing a tough 73-70 contest to Wayne State on Saturday, despite 16 points and 13 rebounds from senior Alex Novak.

Tucker leads MSUM at 19.4 points per game, which is tied for 20th in all of Division II. Novak averages 13.1 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (8.8 per game) and blocks (39). Sophomore Jordan Riewer is at 11.3 points per game. Tucker also leads with 102 assists. As a team, MSUM shoots 48.2 percent from the field and scores 75.0 points per game. The Dragons outrebound their opponents, 36.8-31.6 and allow 66.6 points per game on defense.

Chad Walthall is in his third season at MSUM with a record of 52-30 at the school.

About St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State is 17-5 overall and 13-5 in the NSIC. The Huskies split at home this weekend, beating No. 16 Winona State, 79-78 before losing in the final seconds to Upper Iowa, 71-70. They hold a one-game lead over Northern State for first in the north division, and a three-game lead over MSUM and Bemidji State.

Three Huskies average in double figures, led by Theo Rothstein at 17.2 points per game. Shaun Jensen averages 13.9 points per game and also averages a team-best 5.1 assists per contest. Damarius Cruz averages 10.2 points per game for SCSU. Connor Niehaus leads the Huskies at 5.6 rebounds per game.  SCSU shoots 46.7 percent from the field and scores 77.1 points per game. They are being out rebounded by their opponents, 35.2-30.9 and are allowing 65.9 points per game.

Kevin Schlagel is in his 16th season as SCSU's head coach with a record of 313-146 at the school.

About UMD
UMD is 5-17 overall and 3-15 in the NSIC. The Bulldogs have lost 13 of 15 games, including being swept at home by Upper Iowa (70-69) and Winona State (89-73) last weekend.

Jake Hottenstine leads UMD at 16.2 points per game, while Brett Ervin is at 15.3 points per game. Ervin leads at 4.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. As a team, UMD shoots 43.2 percent from the field and scores 64.7 points per game; the Bulldogs outrebound their opponents 32.2-31.9 but allow 72.6 points per game on defense.

Matt Bowen is in his first season as UMD's head coach with a record of 5-17 at the school.

Climbing the Charts
Senior Alex Novak is at 1,133 career points; he became the 26th Dragon player to surpass 1,000 for his MSUM career in the Dragons' win at Concordia. He is also at 975 rebounds, second all-time and just 57 rebounds away from first place, and is the school's all-time record holder with 207 blocks.  Novak is also second all-time in the NSIC in career rebounds with 753; he trails all-time leader Gus Johnson of Winona State (819 rebounds) by 66 for that mark.

Tucker also surpassed 1,000 points for his college basketball career at Mankato and is at 1,156 points for his career, which includes time at Iowa and Winona State.

Preseason Poll
The Dragons were picked to win the NSIC North Division in the preseason coaches poll and were picked to finish fifth overall in the league. The Dragons are tied for third in the north heading into this weekend; the top four teams in each division will host first-round home games in the NSIC tournament.
