Dragon Men Conclude Regular Season at Home Against Mary and Minot State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team will look to wrap up a home game for the NSIC tournament with a pair of home games to conclude the regular season this weekend, starting against Mary on Friday (8 p.m. tipoff) and concluding with Minot State on Saturday (6 p.m.) on Saturday.

MSUM (16-10, 10-10 NSIC) is In fourth place in the NSIC North Division, one game ahead of Minot State for fourth. If the Dragons sweep this weekend, they will host a first-round NSIC tournament game on Feb. 27, as the top four teams in each division host in the opening round. Mary is 4-20 overall and 3-17 in the NSIC, while Minot State is 10-14 overall and 9-11 in the NSIC.

MSUM and Mary will meet for a 21st time, with the Marauders holding an 11-9 series lead. The Dragons won the meeting earlier this season, 82-70 in Bismarck, N.D. MSUM holds an 18-9 series lead over Minot, including an 84-53 rout of the Beavers in December.

About MSUM
The Dragons dropped a pair of road games last weekend, falling at St. Cloud State, 75-67, despite 22 points from senior Anthony Tucker, and falling at Minnesota-Duluth, 74-66, despite 14 points from Tucker.

Tucker leads MSUM at 19.5 points per game, which is tied for 20th in all of Division II. Senior Alex Novak averages 13.0 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (9.1 per game) and blocks (42). Sophomore Jordan Riewer is at 11.0 points per game. Tucker also leads with 107 assists. As a team, MSUM shoots 48 percent from the field and scores 74.3 points per game. The Dragons outrebound their opponents, 36.7-31.7 and allow 67.2 points per game on defense.

Chad Walthall is in his third season at MSUM with a record of 52-32 at the school.

About Mary
Mary is 4-20 overall and 3-17 in the NSIC. The Marauders ended a 13-game losing streak with a 77-63 win over Minnesota-Crookston on Feb. 15. The next night, Mary lost to Bemidji State, 63-56.

The Marauders are led in scoring by Josh Turner at 13.4 points per game, while Alex Dorr is at 12.8 points per game. Marc Musungayi is at 10.1 points per game. Dorr leads at 7.9 rebounds, while Mike Johnson leads at 3.7 assists per game. Mary shoots 44.3 percent from the field and scores 63.4 points per game.  The Marauders outrebound their opponents, 33.2-31.0 but allow 70.6 points per game.

Jevon Budde is in his second season as Mary's head coach with a record of 12-39 at the school.

About Minot State
Minot State is 10-14 overall and 9-11 in the NSIC. The Beavers swept at home last weekend, beating Bemidji State, 86-76 and Minnesota-Crookston, 88-55.

Two Minot State players average in double figures, led by E.J. Williams at 11.5 points per game and followed by Josh Johnson at 10.1 points per game. Chris East leads at 6.8 reboudns per game, while Dominique McDonald is at 3.5 assists per game. As a team, Minot State shoots 65.8 points per game and shoots 41.4 percent from the field.  Minot State is being outrebonded 34.7-35.5 and allows 68.8 points per game.

Matt Murken is in his first season as Minot State's head coach with a record of 10-14.

Climbing the Charts
Senior Alex Novak is at 1,166 career points; he became the 26th Dragon player to surpass 1,000 for his MSUM career in the Dragons' win at Concordia. He is also at 1,001 rebounds, second all-time and just 16 rebounds away from first place, and is the school's all-time record holder with 210 blocks.  Novak is also second all-time in the NSIC in career rebounds with 779; he trails all-time leader Gus Johnson of Winona State (819 rebounds) by 40 for that mark.

Tucker also surpassed 1,000 points for his college basketball career at Mankato and is at 1,198 points for his career, which includes time at Iowa and Winona State.

Preseason Poll
The Dragons were picked to win the NSIC North Division in the preseason coaches poll and were picked to finish fifth overall in the league. The Dragons are fourth in the north heading into this weekend; the top four teams in each division will host first-round home games in the NSIC tournament.
