MSUM Women's Tennis Splits Two NSIC Matches

BISMARCK, N.D. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team won five of six singles matches and swept all three doubles matches in an 8-1 win over Bemidji State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Bismarck, N.D.

The win gave MSUM (2-5, 2-4 NSIC) a split on the day, as the Dragons lost to Northern State, 8-1 earlier in the morning.

MSUM won two singles matches by forfeit, at the No. 4 and No. 6 slots. The Dragons also three solid wins in singles, as sophomore Jenna Galstad rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Caley Westin at No. 1. At No. 2 singles, freshman Morgan Smith beat Meg Hafdahl, 6-1, 6-1, while at No. 3 singles, freshman Cassie Smith earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over Bemidj's Nicci Hedtke.

The Dragons won all three doubles matches. Morgan Smith and Cassie Smith recorded a 9-7 win over Westin and Hafdahl, while Galstad and junior Jaime LaCoursiere rolled to an 8-3 win over Jessica Dulz and Hedtke at the No. 2 slot. Sophomore Kaitlyn Emerson and junior Kaitlin McNary capped off the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.

Against Northern State, freshman Ashley Wood recorded the lone win for the Dragons, posting a 6-1, 6-4 win over Cayla Cordova at No. 5 singles. Freshman Morgan Smith battled tough at No. 2 singles before losing to Mikela Kowatsch, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 10-6.

Northern won five of six singles matches and swept the doubles on its way to the win.
