ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team opened the 2013 season with a 6-3 loss to Upper Iowa in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday night in St. Louis Park, Minn.

Oliver Summers said. “I was so proud of the team. We came so close to beating a team that we lose to 9-0 last year. Our team is improving at great speed.”
MSUM got singles wins from
Morgan Smith and
Leandra Schmidt at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Smith beat Upper Iowa's Rosangel Espinoza, 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 (third set super tiebreaker) at No. 4 singles, while Schmidt earned a straight set win over Laura Alvarez at No. 6 singles, 7-6, 6-1.
MSUM also won at No. 3 doubles, as
Morgan Smith and
Cassie Smith teamed up for an 8-5 win.
MSUM lost in straight sets at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles. At No. 3 singles,
Jenna Galstad battled tough, winning the first set 7-5, but lost the next two. Upper Iowa also won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
The Dragons face the College of St. Benedict on Thursday at 5 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn., in a nonconference match.
