Dragon Men Return Home to Host Augustana and Wayne State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- Fresh off of a stretch of four straight games on the road, the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team returns home to face Augustana (8 p.m. on Friday) and Wayne State (6 p.m. on Saturday) in a pair of key Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference games this week.

MSUM (15-7, 9-7 NSIC) lost to Upper Iowa (71-62) and Winona State (73-68) in a pair of tough road contests last week. Augustana has won six in a row and is 16-4 and Wayne State is 13-9 overall and 7-9 in the league.

The Dragons will meet Augustana for a 16th time and hold a slight 8-7 edge in the series. The Dragons won two of three meetings a year ago,  winning in Sioux Falls, S.D., 81-76 and in the NSIC tournament, 91-83. Augustana won in Moorhead on Feb. 24, 2012, 75-61. Wayne State holds a 20-4 all-time series lead in the matchup with MSUM, although the teams split a year ago. MSUM won in Wayne, Neb., 55-51 and lost in Moorhead, 64-50.

About MSUM
The Dragons lost a pair of tough games on the road last weekend, falling at Upper Iowa (71-62), despite 15 points from freshman Tyler Vaughan, and at No. 16 Winona State, 73-68 despite 16 points each from seniors Alex Novak and Anthony Tucker.

Tucker leads MSUM at 19.5 points per game, which is tied for 20th in all of Division II. Novak averages 12.7 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (8.5 per game) and blocks (36). Sophomore Jordan Riewer is at 11.6 points per game. Tucker also leads with 93 assists. As a team, MSUM shoots 47.9 percent from the field and scores 75.0 points per game. The Dragons outrebound their opponents, 36.9-32.0 and allow 66.5 points per game on defense.

Chad Walthall is in his third season at MSUM with a record of 51-29 at the school.

About Augustana
Augustana is 16-4 overall and 12-4 in the NSIC. The Vikings, who have won six in a row, swept two games at home last weekend, beating Minnesota-Duluth, 67-52 and St. Cloud State, 89-74.

Cameron McCaffrey leads Augustana -- and the NSIC -- in scoring at 20.3 points per game. He also leads the team with 84 assists. Daniel Jansen averages 10.8 points per game and also leads at 5.2 rebounds. The Vikings average 71.5 points per game as a team and shoot 44.1 percent from the field. They allow 65.2 points per game and outrebound their opposition 37.2-31.8.

Tom Billeter, the one-time head coach at North Dakota State, is in his 10th season as Augustana's head coach with a record of 160-119 at the school.

About Wayne State
The Wildcats are 13-9 overall and 7-9 in the NSIC.  They split at home last weekend, losing to St. Cloud State, 70-66 before beating Minnesota-Duluth, 65-55.

Three Wayne State players average in double figures, led by Amry Shelby at 13.2 points per game. Derrell Williams is at 12.0 points and a team-best 6.2 rebounds per game, while LaTroy Wright is at 11.1 points per game.  Wright leads with 70 assists and 42 steals. The Wildcats score 66.1 points per game and shoot 47.6 percent from the field. They are being out rebounded, 27.7-30.6 and allow 62.1 points per game.

Paul Combs is in his fourth season as Wayne State's head coach with a record of 50-55 at the school.

Climbing the Charts
Senior Alex Novak is at 1,098 career points; he became the 26th Dragon player to surpass 1,000 for his MSUM career in the Dragons' win at Concordia. He is also at 952 rebounds, second all-time and just 80 rebounds away from first place, and is the school's all-time record holder with 204 blocks.  Novak is also second all-time in the NSIC in career rebounds with 730; he trails all-time leader Gus Johnson of Winona State (819 rebounds) by 89 for that mark.

Tucker also surpassed 1,000 points for his college basketball career at Mankato and is at 1,120 points for his career, which includes time at Iowa and Winona State.

Preseason Poll
The Dragons were picked to win the NSIC North Division in the preseason coaches poll and were picked to finish fifth overall in the league. The Dragons are tied for third in the north heading into this weekend; the top four teams in each division will host first-round home games in the NSIC tournament.
