MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's tennis team is back in action against the College of Saint Benedict on Thursday at 5 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn. It's part of a busy week for the Dragon, who face NSIC foes Minnesota-Duluth and St. Cloud State on Saturday in Virginia, Minn.
The Dragons are 0-1 after falling, 6-3, in their Northern Sun Conference opener against Upper Iowa University of Feb. 2. In the match, MSUM had three victories, two in singles and one in doubles.
Morgan Smith and
Leandra Schmidt were victors in singles competition. Smith defeated UIU's Rosangel Espinoza (4-6, 6-1, 10-2), and Schmidt won over Laura Alvarez (7-6, 6-1). The pair of
Morgan Smith and
Cassie Smith won 8-5 in doubles competition.
The College of Saint Benedict Blazers sit 1-0 on the year, defeating Sioux Falls (S.D.) in a 9-0 sweep on Feb. 2. Junior Jamie Hoffman leads the team at No. 1 singles with an 8-3 decision in their opening weekend. Minnesota-Duluth is 1-1, losing to St. Scholastica, 9-0 but beating Bemidji State, 9-0 last weekend.
St. Cloud State is 1-1 as well, losing to Carleton College, 7-2 before beating Macalester, 8-1 last weekend.
